2026 Update!

So you probably been wondering what is happening, so here is the plan!
We have not been responsible for the weather!!

With the Maleny Golf Clubhouse in mid construction, we have moved 300 metres down the road to the Maleny and District Sport and Recreation Club (MDSRC) building and the adjoining field.
This is where we will be for this season.
In many ways it is a better venue than the Golf Club.
We have ten times the observing area. The building facilities are superior and we are a bit more out of the wind and light from Brisbane.
MDSRC (esp Max Whitten) are doing everything they can to make it work, with moves afoot to bring the grass up (or down) to golf course fairway standard, and create more storage area for us.
We have yet to have a large BAS member night there, and feel we need to really understand the place before safely running a public stargazing night.
So we are looking at Saturday May 23rd as our first public night.
If you are a BAS member (or become a BAS member) we have 4 society nights planned before then. You do not need equipment or expertise, just curiosity.
It is our intention to charge for public nights rather than rely on donations. An unsustainably large percentage of people do not donate anything and we cannot afford to continue down this path due to rising expenses, particularly public liability insurance.
We intend to start at $5 an individual and $10 a family, which we believe still represents excellent value and hopefully will see us at least break even. Payment will be through our usual portal with Try Booking and like before we will bring tickets on line 5-7 days before the event once we see the weather forecast.
Entry is free for BAS and Australasian Dark Sky Alliance Members.

We will keep you updated.

A giant leap forward for creating our International Dark Sky Reserve in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland!

But you do not have to wait for International recognition to enjoy it. Street lighting improvements occurred throughout the reserve in the last six months and it is yours to enjoy right now. To learn more go to the Sunshine Cost Council home page and scroll down for details.

The Sunshine Coast hinterland could soon be home to an internationally recognised Dark Sky Reserve, protecting our precious starry skies for the future.

IF the skies are clear over the next few weeks keep an eye down low on the Southern horizon for satellites in polar orbits. They are only seen around the southern solstice when the Sun only goes down 39 degrees even at midnight, so southern polar satellites stay in daylight throughout the night.
Last Boxing Day night three of us saw around 200 satellites between 11pm and 1 am from Maleny Observatory.

7/9ths of the BAS Management Committee (Ken, Jade, John, Paul, Dean, Peter & Les) working hard to secure a new venue for our Maleny astronomy events. Unfortunately, the Maleny Golf Club site will be unavailable in early 2026 due construction work on a new clubhouse. However, we have secured a new venue just a few hundred meters farther along Porters Lane. More announcements to come, however, the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club facility looks to be the ideal venue: https://maps.app.goo.gl/h8GPm4W9EDKG4vVUA

Geminids meteor shower. This annual shower peaks on Saturday night December 13-14 and with moonrise not till Sunday morning 00:15 it could be worth a look late in the evening. Find a dark place, l
ook to the north east about 45 degrees up and give it 30 minutes.
Of course cloud can be a problem and is predicted.
Good luck.
