Maleny Film Society

Maleny Film Society The Maleny Film Society was founded in November 1990 and began screening films from the National Film Archives to an enthusiastic group of 35 members.

Maleny Film Society, founded in 1990, screens the best of world cinema, promotes social interaction, encourages an appreciation of film and collaborates with community groups through film. In 1993 the Society invested in a 35 mm projector (eventually there were 2) which opened up screenings to the public with a wider choice of films. From the beginning the organisation was run by willing volunteer

s and that continues. The Management Committee of nine members continues to meet on a monthly basis. Many more volunteers contribute to film nights and film selection. In 2014 our membership is well over 200 and our technology is D cinema. We screen our films in the newly renovated Maleny Community Centre which seats 220, showing the best of world cinema. Most of the films are chosen through a voting process by our members. We also continue the old tradition of free screenings of international classics from the Film Archives on a monthly basis to members only. The emphasis on social interaction with our pre-dinner meals is a unique attribute of Saturday evening screenings. And we often collaborate with other community groups by making film screenings part of community celebrations and innovations. We have in addition to our fortnightly screenings, special festivals each year – the annual Australian Film Festival in January and various international and indigenous festivals during the year. The Maleny Film Society has become a valued cultural and social institution of the Maleny community- a gathering place for old friends and new,. A spin off of the Society is the Maleny Film Cooperative. Local filmmakers, initially part of the Society, now operate independently with support from the Society.

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, The Mountain Bride – Vermiglio provides an insight into family and community life. Set in the remote alpine village of Vermiglio in 1944, it reflects the zeitgeist during the final year of WWII. It is loosely based on the collective family recollections of Writer/ Director, Maura Delpero. Visually stunning and austere, this moody and meandering drama explores action and consequence, tradition and change through the transformative impact of war on the family of Cesare (Tommaso Ragno), a local schoolteacher and rigid patriarch. Ostensibly a love story between Pietro (Giuseppe De Domenico), a Sicilian deserter sheltering in the village, and Cesare’s eldest daughter Lucia (Martina Scrinzi), this raw and sublime film reflects on how life endures through hardship and loss.

An absolutely fabulous opening night at the 2026 Maleny Film Festival!

Despite the rain, Malenites turned out in costume and in civvies to celebrate the launch in style. The incomparable Dame Edna Everage stole the show, taking out first prize for Best Dressed and bringing plenty of sparkle to the evening.

Guests then settled in to enjoy The Travellers by Bruce Beresford.

A big thank you to Maleny Grove by Reside for sponsoring the opening night film, and to our wonderful media sponsor Glasshouse Country & Maleny News for their generous coverage of the festival.

A fantastic start to the festival!

While dying from lung cancer, famed indigenous actor David Gulpilil made a momentous decision: he would invite the whole world to his funeral. Journey Home, David Gulpilil follows the passage of the Yolngu actor’s body from Murray Bridge in South Australia to Darwin, then on to Arnhem Land. Finally, he is taken to his homeland, remote Gupulul, for a funeral ceremony never seen before—by the west, or even most of the Yolngu people. Journey Home, David Gulpilil offers us an immense privilege—the opportunity to witness the grief and ritual of Gulpilil’s people. Narrated by Hugh Jackman, this is a fitting tribute to the much-loved star of Walkabout, Storm Boy, Crocodile Dundee and Rabbit-Proof Fence..

Disgraced weatherman Chris Masterman becomes stranded on his way to Broome, and rescues a joey orphaned by the side of the road. He meets 12-year-old Charlie who has recently moved to the small town and is missing her former home. The two form an unlikely friendship and end up rescuing and rehabilitating other joeys, changing both their lives in the process, and founding a joey rehabilitation centre. There are plenty of comic moments in this heart-warming family movie which showcases the Australian outback, and the resilience of those living there. With stunning landscape, lots of laughs, and cute joeys, what’s not to like?

After a whirlwind romance, African American Bolude accepts her Australian boyfriend’s marriage proposal. Bitterly disappointed, her Nigerian diplomat father demands that she follow tradition, giving her just ten days to gain 100 welcomes from 100 Australian villages. Otherwise, he will not bless their union. With her best friend Carmen in tow, Bolude flies from New York to Sydney. In a race against time they rush through Sydney, meeting people from a diverse range of backgrounds as they seek to fulfil her father’s wishes.
