Kids do well when they can 💚

Instead of “why won’t they do it?”, we ask “what’s getting in the way?”

A child who is struggling with an expectation might be overwhelmed, dysregulated, missing a skill, having trouble processing the information, unsure what’s expected, or dealing with a demand that just isn’t manageable for them in that moment.

When we start getting curious about what the child needs in order to succeed, we're able to troubleshoot and address barriers. When we address these barriers, we create the conditions for our children to do well and behaviours tend to fall away.

When we call someone back, follow through, include them, change our approach when something isn’t working, or are responsive to concerns, we are always chuffed when people thank us. When a parent thanks us for listening, or when a young person is surprised that we asked what they thought, or when a family tells us they feel important, prioritised or cared about, we’re always incredibly grateful to hear that people feel safe and cared for with us. We absolutely strive for this and it is so important to us!

So often though, we find ourselves responding with “I'm so glad we could help, but really, it’s the bare minimum,” because this standard of support should be the norm instead of the exception!

At a minimum, people providing support to other people should:
✅ create spaces where people feel safe, welcome and wanted
✅ involve children, young people and families in decisions about them
✅ approach people with curiosity and empathy rather than making assumptions
✅ listen when someone tells us what they need and take their needs seriously
✅ communicate, follow through, and treat people like they matter

Expecting this from a support provider is not asking too much, it's asking for the bare minimum 💚

Blowing bubbles is not just for fun!

It also promotes:
😆laughter, which is so important for maintaining happiness and lifting mood when we're struggling
🫁deep breathing, which is an important skill to learn to eventually be able to self-regulate. By doing it with them, we are co-regulating (regulating together) and laying the groundwork for more independent regulation later. In moments of stress, you might try saying "remember when we were blowing bubbles the other day? Let's try that now and see if it can help with these big feelings"
👋connection, which is so important for supporting strong relationships, helping kids feel valued and important, or resetting after a tough day
🏃🏽‍♂️big body movement; think jumping to pop bubbles, squatting down to get low bubbles before the hit the floor, running, pointing and dancing around. This is so important for using up extra energy, regulating sensory needs, and keeping our bodies strong and healthy

And luckily for us, it's not just the kids that reap these benefits! 😉

Sound familiar?

One of the biggest myths in behaviour support with young people is that avoiding power struggles means giving in to pushback or protests, and letting young people "have what they want". It doesn't.

You can hold boundaries without getting pulled into a power struggle. Stay calm and offer opportunities for co-regulation.
- "I'm here if you want a hug"
- "I'd love to do X instead if you're interested!"
- "Is there something that make this easier for you?"

Use scripts to communicate the boundary is not changing. You might like:
- "I hear what you're telling me and I'll keep it in mind"
- "It makes sense that you feel that way"
- "I've made this decision because..."
- "We can be flexible around A, B, or C, but the boundary isn't changing"

Young people don't need us to overpower them or argue with them. They need us to be consistent, predictable, and willing to understand their perspective.
