The Rise of the “Tradwife” Movement - article by Isabelle Colbert

As part of SOH's "All About Women", a panel moderated by writer and performer Nakkiah Lui, explored the cultural phenomenon and viral TikTok trend known as the “Tradwife” movement.

What Is a Tradwife?
Short for “traditional wife”, the term refers to women who embrace conventional gender roles, often rooted in mid-20th-century ideals. Tradwives typically forego careers outside the home, choosing instead to dedicate themselves to domestic duties such as cooking, cleaning, raising children, and supporting their husbands as the primary breadwinners. For many, this lifestyle offers a sense of purpose and fulfillment, though it remains deeply polarising.

The Social Media Aesthetic
Social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube have played a significant role in popularising the "tradwife" lifestyle. Panelist Rosie Waterland pointed to the hyper-curated, vintage-inspired content many tradwives produce. Picture scenes of homemade baking, gardening, sewing, and idyllic homemaking set against a backdrop of 1950s Americana. Think floral aprons, gleaming kitchens, and smiling housewives.

Some influencers incorporate religious or nationalist ideals, linking the tradwife lifestyle to more conservative worldviews. Panelist Beverley Wang emphasised that the movement can sometimes act as a gateway to broader conservative values, raising questions about its social implications.

Debate and Backlash
Critics argue that the movement idealises a time when women had limited rights and fewer opportunities. The panel interrogated whether the tradwife aesthetic masks a more regressive message—that a woman’s value is intrinsically tied to her domestic role.

A key theme of the discussion was choice: is tradwifery an empowered lifestyle or a disguised submission to outdated gender expectations? Supporters claim it’s a feminist reclamation of domesticity - an alternative path to fulfillment in a world dominated by neoliberal, career-driven ideals.

Journalist Megan Agnew shared her experience interviewing the family behind the “Ballerina Farm” brand. She recounted how questions directed at Hannah Neeleman were often answered by, or redirected to, her husband, Daniel Neeleman. When asked, “Is this what you always wanted?”, Hannah revealed she had once dreamed of a ballet career but gave it up for family life.

A Complex Choice in a Modern World
As with many contemporary lifestyle movements, the truth lies in the gray. The tradwife trend challenges our assumptions about gender, autonomy, and the pursuit of fulfillment. Whether seen as empowering or problematic, it undeniably reflects the ongoing negotiation of what it means to be a woman today.

On 9 March 2025 at Sydney Opera House, presenters Zahra al Hilaly, Rosie Batty, Kyllie Cripps, Jess Hill, Julie Inman Grant discussed the "great Australian crisis that no one knows how to stop" - domestic violence. Australia is in the midst of what the Prime Minister designated a "national crisis" of violence against women.

Violence is increasing with new forms of abuse such as those enabled by technology - stalking, surveilling and harassing - from tracking devices placed in children's toys, remote locking of refrigerators, to threatening messages embedded in bank transfers. The abuser is not even present.

The problem extends beyond the woman's intimate partner, to other members within the family and household.

Over the past two years, rates of homicide have increased.

COVID unfortunately accelerated domestic abuse by imposing social isolation.

Technology is "out of the gates" with legislation failing to keep up. There has been little forethought from developers with respect of safety and privacy. Slowly, safeguards are being introduced.
