We’re excited to share our next undergraduate student seminar!

Come along even if you don’t have prior knowledge, all students with an interest in maths and stats are welcome. This is a great opportunity to see how mathematical and statistical ideas can connect to real-world decision-making, including in finance.

Title: A Bayesian Approach to Optimal Stopping Problems
Speaker: Eric Lin

📅 Date: Tuesday 26 May
🕑 Time: 2:00pm
📍 Location: 12WW 724 (Level 7)

Abstract:
Optimal stopping problems arise in a wide range of settings where decisions must be made sequentially under uncertainty, with the objective of choosing the most advantageous time to act. This presentation examines a Bayesian approach to such problems and compares its performance with that of simpler benchmark strategies. It begins by presenting closed-form analytical solutions in settings with bounded decision horizons, where tractable results can be obtained explicitly. It then considers more complex problems with unbounded decision horizons, for which computational approximations are required. The presentation concludes with a Monte Carlo simulation illustrating the effectiveness of the Bayesian approach.

Title: Finding Factors in Berlekamp’s Algebra
When: Wednesday, April 1st, 11:00am – 12:00pm

Abstract: Berlekamp’s algorithm is an algorithm for factoring polynomials from the sixties. It’s pretty simple, and pretty satisfying - let’s talk about it! Time permitting, we might also have a go at implementing it in Haskell.
