SMBI NATURE ACTION GROUP
We welcome all SMBI residents to help with projects big and small to protect and enhance our unique island environment.
In 2026, we are working with the Redland City Council Parkcare program to improve and beautify our island parks, and, programs to encourage a Circular Economy on SMBI through Recycling Initatives - Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Recycle. To join and volunteer, email us [email protected]
Project priorities from our SMBI Communities……
● Nature walking trails renewal, with updated brochures and maps
● Macleay Island Community Park Working Group, with Running Wild and Redland City Council’s Parkcare Program to care for and enhance community parks
● Scrunchable Soft Plastics recycling trial on all SMBI
● Future Trash & Treasure programs on all SMBI
● Support the Macleay & Russell Island litter cleanup campaigs
● Start a Repair Cafe on Macleay Is to complement the Russell Is Repair Cafe
● Address the affects of clearing and slashing of land for new houses on our SMBI ecosystems
● Bush tucker gardens
● Support the Renegade Men's Shed with upkeep of their wooden seats on Nature Trails around Macleay Is
● Support the listed Heritage sites on SMBI
● Investigate the future of the privately owned 67 acres of bushland on Macleay.
● Working with Council on SMBI environmental issues
● Koala habitat and the possibility of koala reintroduction.
