🇦🇺 60 YEARS ON: REMEMBERING THE BATTLE OF LONG TAN

Mackay’s Vietnam veterans will gather at Jubilee Park on Tuesday, August 18, to mark 60 years since the Battle of Long Tan and honour those who served, were wounded and lost their lives during the Vietnam War.

The ceremony will include a parade, wreath-laying and poppy tribute, with the community welcome to attend.

Three years ago today, on 28 July 2023, an Australian Army MRH-90 Taipan helicopter impacted waters near Lindeman Island, Queensland, during a night-time training activity as part of Exercise Talisman Sabre 2023.

Tragically, Captain Danniel Lyon, Lieutenant Maxwell Nugent, Warrant Officer Class 2 Joseph ‘Phillip’ Laycock, and Corporal Alexander Naggs from the 6th Aviation Regiment were killed in the incident.

A new memorial was unveiled last week at Shute Harbour overlooking the waters where the tragedy occurred, to honour the lives of four men lost too soon.

Today, we remember their service, their sacrifice, and the loved ones who continue to carry their loss. Lest we forget.

The sinking of the Hospital Ship Centaur

On this day in 1943, the 2/3rd Australian Hospital Ship (AHS) Centaur was en route from Sydney to Cairns when it was sunk by a Japanese submarine south of Moreton Island, off the Queensland coast.
Of the 332 people on board, only 64 survived.

Today we honour the memory of those who lost their lives on the Centaur and pay tribute to the survivors and their families.
