Today marks 59 years since the 1967 Referendum, when Australians overwhelmingly voted “Yes” for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to be counted in Australia’s population and for the Federal Government to make laws for First Nations people.
Before this, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were excluded from population counts and denied recognition in the Constitution.
The referendum was an important moment in Australia’s history, made possible by decades of campaigning and advocacy by First Nations people fighting for justice, equality, and recognition.
Today, we acknowledge the strength and leadership of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and recognise that the journey toward truth, justice, and self-determination continues.
Always was, always will be Aboriginal land.
