It was great to see so many people attend the Mackay Disability Expo and explore the wide range of supports available across our region.

Sarah and Abby enjoyed meeting those living with disabilities, families, carers and fellow service providers throughout the day.

We shared information about our services and learn more about the goals and aspirations of our community members. Thank you to everyone who stopped by for a chat!

For more information, visit us at 1/38–40 Wellington Street or get in touch with our NDIS Services Coordinator Sarah.

In our continued effort to prevent homelessness and sustain tenancies across the region, we have been working alongside InCommunity Connect and First National 360 Mackay, Sarina & Nebo to support households through early intervention.

While this initiative has been active since December 2025, CASA Mackay General Manager Will Stafford recently caught up with InCommunity CEO Paul Tommasini and First National Business Development Manager and Property Manager Kristy Surman to further strengthen this partnership and its local impact.

Developed by InCommunity, PM Assist by the Tenancy Skills Institute is a secure online platform that enables property managers to make early intervention referrals to community services. We’re proud to be a local delivery partner, working alongside these stakeholders to bring this service to the Mackay Region and support those who need it most.

Property managers are often the first to identify when a tenancy is at risk, with only a short window to address issues before a Notice to Leave is issued. Creating a clear pathway for early support is critical in preventing these situations from escalating.

Since December 2025, the initiative has supported over 40 referrals, including 15 new referrals in March alone, assisting more than 100 residents across the community.

While we look forward to continuing this initiative, we’re excited to expand this program and our community services to those in need across the Mackay and Sarina region.

CASA welcomes clients through all kinds of outreach pathways and other local services, each facing different challenges and levels of housing instability.

A recent client had complex personal needs and was supported through IHR (Immediate Housing Response) accommodation. Our Intake team worked closely with them, stabilising immediate needs, building trust, and addressing barriers to long-term housing.

Through ongoing advocacy, application support and collaboration with external providers, the client was able to secure a private rental property – a major milestone after previously facing multiple barriers to stable housing.

Our support continued beyond moving in. Through the Homestay program and support from NILS (No Interest Loan Scheme) for essential household items, the client gained the practical tools and confidence to maintain their tenancy.

Today, the client is settled, confident and on a path to long-term stability.

This week, a local family of three will move into a safe and accessible home – thanks to an extraordinary network of community organisations working together to prevent them from falling through the cracks.

The family – mum, dad and their 34-year-old son who lives with cerebral palsy – recently faced the distressing reality of homelessness. With urgent accessibility needs and limited housing options, the situation could have quickly become overwhelming.

Our services stepped in with short-term motel accommodation and coordinated supports, while service providers, housing advocates and disability specialists worked together to secure a three-bedroom accessible rental.

The family also connected with the NDIS, ensuring tailored disability supports are in place from day one. Ongoing support through our Homestay program will help them settle in and build long-term stability.

This story is a powerful example of what coordinated, compassionate community support can achieve – turning crisis into stability.

Over the past three years, our Intake team has seen a significant shift in who is coming through our doors.

Since 2024, the proportion of new clients has increased from 41% to 60% - and if current trends continue, the number of first-time households presenting to CASA will have increased by more than 50% in just two years.

In 2026, we’re on track to open 2,256 support periods, with new client presentations projected to rise by 33% compared to last year alone.

The data highlights a clear trend:
• Housing pressure is increasing across the Mackay community
• More individuals are presenting in crisis for the first time
• Frontline cases are becoming increasingly complex

Each new client requires a comprehensive assessment, system navigation, brokerage coordination and emotional support.

Our Intake team continues to serve as the region’s housing pressure valve, responding to demand with expertise and compassion.

This is not a temporary spike - it represents a structural shift. Strategic investment in early intervention is essential to prevent crisis from becoming long-term.

Ken Higgins from RSL Mackay Sub Branch Inc visited the CASA office to present a donation of over $27,000 raised through the ‘Murray Just Keep Marching’ campaign.

Murray spent nine days walking Mackay’s Blue Water Trail – covering an incredible 382km, the equivalent distance of Mackay to Townsville.

Through the campaign, Murray advocated for greater awareness of veteran homelessness, using the walk to start conversations and call for action on an issue that is often overlooked.

The funds raised are now being donated to directly support veterans as they work towards securing safe, stable housing through CASA Mackay.

We sincerely thank Murray, RSL Mackay and everyone who supported the campaign for raising the conversation first, and for turning awareness into meaningful support.

Australia is in a housing crisis, and the lack of affordable long-term housing is very real. Many Australians are doing it incredibly tough, and rough sleeping is a visible, distressing part of that reality.

When it comes specifically to people sleeping rough, CASA does have access to emergency accommodation, including motel rooms and hostel beds. The challenge we face is not simply the number of rooms available.

Many individuals experiencing homelessness are managing complex mental health issues, substance use, trauma and behaviours that can make emergency accommodation unsafe or difficult to sustain without comprehensive support.

Addressing mental health and substance use isn’t a side issue – it is a crucial part of the housing journey. Emergency accommodation works best when it is paired with the right outreach, clinical response and specialist substance use support.

We remain committed to offering emergency accommodation wherever possible, continuing outreach with people sleeping rough and advocating strongly for the services needed so people can succeed once housed.
