What a great day with the students from Trentham Primary School at beautiful Hanging Rock!

Our Kangaroo Walk & Talk gave the students the chance to get out amongst nature and learn about the kangaroos and other native wildlife that call the Macedon Ranges home — and the kids absolutely loved it!

Guided by trained MRWN members, the students observed kangaroos in their natural environment while learning about their behaviour, family and social structures, habitat needs and the challenges they face.

There were plenty of questions, observations and enthusiastic discussions along the way as we explored how we can safely coexist with wildlife and the importance of protecting habitat, wildlife corridors, wildlife-friendly fencing and keeping animals safe on our roads.

There really is no better classroom than being out in nature. 🦘💚

Our Kangaroo Walk & Talk program is delivered by Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network in collaboration with Kangaroos Alive, with the support of Hanging Rock Park Rangers and Macedon Ranges Shire Council.

🚨 𝗙𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗞𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗔𝗥𝗢𝗢𝗦 𝗥𝗨𝗡 𝗗𝗢𝗪𝗡 – 𝗔 𝗗𝗘𝗟𝗜𝗕𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗘 𝗔𝗖𝗧 𝗢𝗙 𝗖𝗥𝗨𝗘𝗟𝗧𝗬? 🚨

Frontier Avenue, Aintree – Saturday morning, 17 October 2026.

What you are about to witness is utterly heartbreaking and deeply disturbing.

Five kangaroos were struck by a vehicle in an incident that appears to have been deliberate. Listen carefully to the audio. You can hear the vehicle accelerate as it approaches the kangaroos.

MRWN wildlife rescuer Szumai responded immediately to the call-out, arriving to confront a scene of unimaginable suffering. Victoria Police were also in attendance.

Tragically, two of the kangaroos were carrying pouch joeys and required humane euthanasia.

And the suffering is not over.

One kangaroo, having sustained a severely broken leg, managed to escape into the adjoining wetlands. An MRWN drone operator is currently assisting with the search in a desperate effort to locate this injured animal and bring an end to his suffering.

For wildlife rescuers, witnessing the aftermath of such appalling incidents takes an enormous emotional toll. Even the most experienced rescuers never become accustomed to the trauma, suffering and senseless loss of life.

If this was deliberate, it is an unconscionable act of animal cruelty and a criminal matter that demands investigation and accountability.

Meet Heather, who has been obsessed with her Koala soft toy since she was a tiny orphan — and now she simply won’t be without it! 🥰

Heather is growing beautifully and enjoying spending time in her possum box as she develops the skills and independence she’ll need for life back in the wild.

Another little step closer to release. 🌿💚

Heather is currently in care at a Macedon Ranges wildlife shelter.

𝗚𝗜𝗦𝗕𝗢𝗥𝗡𝗘 𝗝𝗢𝗘𝗬 𝗦𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗧𝗦 – 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗠𝗣𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 🌿🦘

MRWN recently joined the Gisborne Joey Scouts as they work towards their Champions for Nature Badge. 🌏💚

This environmental proficiency award forms part of the global Earth Tribe initiative, encouraging young people to connect with nature, protect biodiversity and develop sustainable, wildlife-friendly habits.

MRWN delivered an interactive wildlife education session for the Joeys and their parents, exploring our local native wildlife, the challenges animals face in the Macedon Ranges, and practical ways families can help protect wildlife and assist when they find an injured animal.

The Joeys also put their creativity to work decorating wildlife nesting boxes, kindly crafted by the Gisborne Men’s Shed, using timber generously donated by Woodend Timber Search. 🏡🎨 A wonderful community collaboration supporting both wildlife and wildlife education. 🏡🎨

It was wonderful to see children and parents learning together and building an appreciation for the wildlife that shares our local environment.

Education and advocacy are an important part of what we do at MRWN — and there’s no better place to start than with the next generation. 🌿💚

𝗣𝗜𝗣 – 𝗔 𝗟𝗜𝗧𝗧𝗟𝗘 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬 𝗢𝗙 𝗛𝗢𝗣𝗘 💚🐾

An update on our little story of hope from a couple of weeks ago!

Pip is not so little anymore! He’s now 191g, has two other little ringtail buddies and is absolutely thriving. 🌿

He’s come such a long way from the tiny 63g Pip who arrived cold and flat after being rescued from his deceased Mumma’s pouch. Tragically, his sibling was also found deceased alongside him.

Now safe, warm and growing stronger every day, Pip is a beautiful reminder of what dedicated wildlife rescue and foster care can achieve. 💚

And how gorgeous is Pip’s hanging felt pouch, lovingly crafted by Woodend local Linda to keep our little wildlife in care cosy and secure. 🧵💚

𝗛𝗢𝗡𝗘𝗬 — 𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗬, 𝗕𝗨𝗧 𝗠𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧𝗬 🧡🐾

In the middle of the night a month ago, little Honey was rescued by Ruth — tiny, hairless and incredibly vulnerable.

The next day she made her first trip to Werribee Open Range Zoo Wildlife Hospital for assessment. There were a few worrying days when she became unwell, but with wonderful veterinary support and plenty of dedicated care, this little girl kept fighting.

These gorgeous little Ringtail Possums are currently in care with MRWN members — and seriously, it’s cuteness overload! 🥹

Safe, warm and being given all the care they need, including specialised milk formula supported by WIRES, until they’re ready for their next chapter back in the wild. 🌿
