Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network is incredibly grateful to WIRES and the Environmental NGO & Community Groups Grants Program for supporting our local wildlife rescue preparedness and response.

This generous support has allowed us to provide essential rescue equipment for current & new rescuers, macropod rescuers and public pouch check packs across the Macedon Ranges.

By helping us onboard and equip additional rescuers, we are able to attend more wildlife cases and respond more quickly when animals need help.

The supply of equipment also reduces the personal financial burden on volunteer rescuers, improves safety and efficiency in the field, and helps combat volunteer burnout.

Most importantly, this support strengthens the long-term sustainability of our local wildlife rescue network, helping ensure injured, orphaned and displaced wildlife have a better chance of receiving timely care.

Thank you WIRES for investing in wildlife, volunteers and the future of rescue in the Macedon Ranges. πŸ’š

This lovely ringtail possum was found curled up in a car engine, trying to find some warmth during the recent cold, wet snap.

A call to Wildlife Victoria ensured a rescuer was quickly dispatched, and she was taken straight to the vet for assessment and careful re-warming.

The vet examination revealed that this dear old lady is a geriatric possum, likely nearing the end of her natural life. At her age, the cold and wet weather has made her especially vulnerable.

We can only imagine the many stories she would have to tell. We hope her life has been full of adventures, leafy feasts, moonlit travels and possum mischief.

She is now in foster care with MRWN member Christina, enjoying warmth, comfort and whatever food she desires. Grapes are her favourite. πŸ‡

However long she has left, Christina will make sure Grandma Poss is comfortable, warm and has a full belly.

Here’s to you, Grandma Poss. πŸ’š

Loving wildlife can be expressed in many ways. MRWN member Eris is not only a dedicated local wildlife rescuer, but also regularly volunteers at the Jirrahlinga Dingo Conservation & Wildlife Education Centre.

Volunteering can open doors to experiences and opportunities you may never have imagined. It's a wonderful way to expand your knowledge, meet like-minded people, and gain a deeper understanding of wildlife, conservation and the many people who work to protect our natural world.

Here's Eris making some new friends and getting up close with the dingoes! 🐺❀️

Thinking about volunteering? You never know where the journey might take you.

This little boy was separated from his mum at the new Ambrosia Estate in Kyneton after a fence was installed that was impenetrable to a joey of his size, leaving him trapped on one side and his mum on the other.

For six heartbreaking days, his mum remained by the fence, staying close to her joey and trying to maintain contact. Sadly, despite her efforts, she was eventually forced to rejoin the mob, leaving the youngster alone and vulnerable.

What makes this story special is that the fencing contractor witnessed the entire ordeal. Recognising that the joey was far too young to survive on his own, he showed genuine compassion and kindness by contacting Wildlife Victoria for assistance.

πŸš‘ Enter MRWN members Sarah and Rob.

When help arrived, the joey was cold, dehydrated and weak, making his rescue straightforward. He was quickly transported to the wonderful team at East Trentham Wildlife Shelter, where he immediately received the warmth, fluids and specialised care he desperately needed.

πŸ₯› Today, he is safe, comfortable and settling into life with a mini mob of joeys his own size. Over the coming months he will grow, gain confidence and learn the skills he needs to eventually return to the wild.

πŸ’š This rescue is a wonderful reminder that wildlife outcomes are often improved by everyday people who choose to act with kindness. Thank you to the contractor who cared enough to make the call, and to Sarah and Rob for giving this little fellow a second chance.

And finally, every joey in care needs a name...

Benalla Golf Club's media release defending its plan to shoot local kangaroos is unacceptable.
The community is demanding the club abandon this cruel proposal, consult local wildlife experts, and adopt humane coexistence strategies. They want clear assurances that the kangaroos will not be shot - not PR spin.
Make your voice heard: compassion and coexistence, not killing.

πŸ’› The Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the incredible team Woodend Rotary for their generous support of our wildlife rescuers.

🦺 Through this fantastic local partnership, Rotary Woodend has provided our members with high quality, professional grade reversible safety vests featuring both the MRWN and Rotary logos. The vests are polar fleece lined for warmth, waterproof on the outside, highly reflective for night visibility and packed with practical pockets for rescue equipment.

🚨 Rotary Woodend has also supplied reflective warning triangles to help improve safety for our members when responding to wildlife emergencies on roadsides across the Macedon Ranges.

🦘 Over the long weekend our members were out in force wearing their new vests and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Not only do they help keep our volunteers safer, they also provide a professional and recognisable presence when assisting injured wildlife and supporting members of the public.

🀝 This partnership is a wonderful example of one local volunteer organisation supporting another. Both Rotary Woodend and MRWN are powered by volunteers who give their time, skills and energy to make the Macedon Ranges a better place for people and wildlife.

πŸ’š We are incredibly grateful for Rotary Woodend's commitment to community safety, wildlife welfare and volunteer support. Your generosity will make a real difference every time one of our members answers the call to help an animal in need.
