🐨𝗦𝗛𝗘 𝗡𝗘𝗘𝗗𝗘𝗗 𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗡 𝗛𝗘𝗟𝗣 𝗖𝗥𝗢𝗦𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗢𝗔𝗗 🐨

A koala crossing a busy road in Woodend this morning caused many drivers to stop and assist, making sure she reached the side of the road safely.

But one wildlife-aware local, Heather, noticed something more.

The koala did not look well.

Heather immediately called for help and a koala trained wildlife rescuer was dispatched. It quickly became clear that this girl was in poor health and urgently needed veterinary care.

She was transported directly to the Wildlife Hospital, where she was examined by their specialist koala emergency team.

Sadly, the results were devastating.

She was a very old koala with extremely worn teeth and was severely emaciated. Her blood results showed significant kidney failure, there was no measurable blood glucose reading, and she was also fighting a serious pneumonia.

With such extensive illness and a very poor prognosis, the kindest decision was made to put this beautiful old girl to sleep.

She is now at rest. 💔🐨

Thank you to every driver who stopped to help her cross safely, and especially to Heather, who recognised that this was not simply a koala moving through the landscape. Her decision to look a little closer and call for help meant this girl did not continue to suffer unseen.

𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗙𝗜𝗟𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗔 𝗪𝗜𝗟𝗗𝗟𝗜𝗙𝗘 𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗘𝗥 🐾

For MRWN member and wildlife carer Christina, the past week has been a busy one filled with orphans and injuries.

Spring is the busiest time of year for wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, with increasing numbers of orphaned and injured animals needing help.

Being a wildlife carer and rescuer is a privilege, but it involves a lot of loss, grief and frustration.

Christina primarily raises baby wombats, but she is also a point of contact for people who have rescued animals.

“It’s so sad and distressing to see the results of whatever accident they have been involved in. Many car versus animal accidents are not reported, and animals are left in pain for the next person to find and help them.

The animals we rescue are compromised by road collisions, human intervention, neglect and injuries. Some can be healed.

In the past week we did pouch checks that resulted in a wee wombat girl who is miraculously uninjured, an Eastern Grey Kangaroo joey who was put to sleep because she had two broken legs, a baby Ringtail Possum who was too injured to survive, and a concussed Boobook Owl.

That’s just the animals I personally assessed and dealt with. Being confronted with smashed bodies repeatedly is hard, but we are fortunate that we can help them.”

If you come across a live injured animal, keep a safe distance and do not attempt to approach or handle it. Record the exact location or drop a GPS pin so a rescuer can find it quickly.

With the current threat of avian influenza (bird flu), McIntyre Vets is taking extra precautions when assessing birds.
This includes pet birds and native wildlife. 🐦
To help reduce the risk of transmission, please follow these important steps:
🚗 Please leave your bird in the car on arrival.
📞 Contact front reception to let us know you have arrived.
👩‍⚕️ A veterinarian will assess your bird outside.
🥼 Our veterinary team will be wearing protective gear to help reduce the risk of transmission.

𝗔 𝗖𝗛𝗜𝗠𝗡𝗘𝗬 𝗩𝗜𝗦𝗜𝗧𝗢𝗥 𝗥𝗘𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗡𝗦 𝗛𝗢𝗠𝗘 🐾🏡

This young adult Brushtail Possum was found huddled in the corner of a family home in New Gisborne after making an unexpected entrance down the chimney.

The homeowner kindly called Wildlife Victoria and a rescuer attended to assess him. As he seemed a little compromised, he was transported to Veterinary Clinic for a veterinary assessment.

Thankfully, he was given a clean bill of health, with instructions for a few days in shelter care to rehydrate, rest and regain his strength. While in care, he snuggled into his cosy Possum Palace, also kindly crafted by a talented Woodend local. 💚

Once ready, he was successfully released back onto his home ground, into his very own nesting box. MRWN members worked together to install the box and give him a safe alternative place to call home.

The homeowner is also covering the chimney opening with wildlife safe mesh to hopefully prevent any future unexpected visitors.

It really does take a village. A caring homeowner, Wildlife Victoria, a rescuer, veterinary care, shelter care, generous community crafters and MRWN members all played a part in getting this little fellow safely home again. 🐾💚
