We're in Waring, one of our favourite seasons!

The Wurundjeri Indigenous seasonal cycle recognises seven distinct weather periods that occur across the year. Known as Wombat season in the calendar, cool and rainy days follow misty mornings from April until July. Days are short, and nights are long. Wombats emerge from their burrows, and the temperatures are low.

We have recently seen old commercial vineyard netting being offered to the public through local Buy, Swap & Sell pages.

โš–๏ธ Since 1 September 2021, it has been illegal in Victoria to use or sell household fruit tree netting with a mesh size greater than 5mm x 5mm when stretched. Commercial vineyard netting is NOT COMPLIANT for household use.

๐Ÿฆ Large aperture netting can entangle birds, bats, possums, gliders, reptiles and even koalas & kangaroos, often causing severe injury or death.

โš ๏ธ Significant penalties apply for using non-compliant netting on household fruit trees and gardens.

โ™ป๏ธ If you are replacing old netting, please dispose of it responsibly rather than passing the risk on to wildlife.

Struggling to get going on this first day of winter? You're not alone!

๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ’ค Pudding has gone into a full milk coma after breakfast and has absolutely no plans to be productive today.

๐Ÿฆ‡ Here is a selection of photographs from recent Grey-headed Flying Fox rescues in the Bendigo region. Barbed wire remains one of the most significant threats to our native wildlife, particularly animals that fly or glide through our landscapes at night.

๐Ÿฆ‡ These enchanting animals became entangled in fencing and required rescue. Thanks to the efforts of dedicated Bendigo rescuers with some assistance from MRWN members, both were safely transported to the specialist team at Fly By Night Bat Clinic, where they are now receiving expert care.

๐Ÿฆ‡ If you are considering installing or replacing fencing on your property, please think about the impact on wildlife. Simple changes can make a significant difference and help prevent unnecessary suffering.

๐ŸŒ We also sincerely thank Macedon Ranges Shire Council for their willingness to collaborate, listen and work towards valuing and protecting wildlife across the Macedon Ranges.

๐Ÿš‘ This beautiful Kookaburra was rescued on Ashbourne Rd Woodend by MRWN member Luca, who transported the bird to the veterinary team at Werribee Open Range Zoo for assessment and treatment.

๐Ÿฉบ The Kookaburra was found to have a fractured ulna (wing), which was successfully treated. After 7 weeks in rehabilitation, this stunning bird was finally returned to its home for release by none other than Luca, who couldnโ€™t have been happier to complete the circle.

๐Ÿ’š A wonderful outcome made possible through quick action, expert veterinary care, and dedicated wildlife rehabilitation.

This little Ringtail possum was rescued last night by Ruth after being found immobile on the ground by a caring Newham local.

๐Ÿพ A visit to the Woodend Veterinary Centre today gave him the full once over. Thankfully, X-rays did not reveal any fractures and it appears he is suffering from spinal shock, most likely caused by a fall from a tree.

๐ŸŒฟ He is now pain free, warm, rehydrated and enjoying some food while receiving loving care in a local wildlife shelter to give him the best possible chance of recovery.

๐Ÿพ Heโ€™s absolutely adorable and very accepting of the people giving him a second chance to return home amongst the gum trees.

๐ŸŒฟ Thank you to everyone involved in helping this precious native animal. Every rescue matters.

Nothing short of tragic. This glorious pair of Purple Swamphen, well known to locals who regularly travel Dons Road, Newham, have sadly lost their lives to roadstrike. They were a familiar and beautiful presence around the waterways and dams of the area and will be deeply missed by those who enjoyed seeing them go about their business.

๐Ÿš— Please be mindful of wildlife when driving, especially near waterways, grasslands and roadside vegetation. If you see an animal ahead on or near the road, even a gentle slowdown to give them time to safely move away can save a life.

๐Ÿ’œ Our wildlife shares these landscapes with us. A little extra awareness behind the wheel can make all the difference.
