Thank you to the 97 finishers who joined us this weekend for another fantastic morning of community spirit, personal achievements, and fresh air.

We got treated another glorious sunny Saturday... hope everyone enjoyed the nice sunshine at the finish line! Just to highlight that it was the 8th of the 8th, that's quite an auspicious date! It is a sign that whoever got milestones and the finish token numbers 8 and 88 may probably need to buy a powerball lottery ticket. ✌️😊

⭐ Legend Spotted on the Course: Colin Healey

For many runners, earning the Six Star medal across the World Marathon Majors is a lifetime goal. Colin Healey is almost there... he has already conquered Chicago, New York, London, Tokyo and Berlin! With Boston on his horizon for next year, he has just one star left to collect. But Colin isn't stopping there, he's running Sydney later this month as he sets his sights on the expanding lineup of World Marathon Majors!

On top of his personal racing experiences, he loves to share about the mission of Achilles Melbourne, a running club that is dedicated to helping people with disabilities enjoy the health and social benefits of exercise. As an active member, Colin regularly holds the tether on Sunday mornings and race days. He explains that guiding is built on teamwork between the visually impaired (VI) athlete, the primary guide who runs tethered alongside the VI runner and the secondary guide called "the bulldozer" who navigates the crowds and clears the path. He breaks down the details on how guides and VI runners are paired based on pace and fitness goals, whether it is for a casual training session or for a serious race.

Colin has helped numerous VI runners to cross finish lines and to personal bests. In fact, at the Gold Coast Marathon last July, Colin has guided VI athlete Mic to his Boston Marathon qualifying time of 4:12! How amazing is that?!!

When asked what it takes to be a guide, Colin’s advice is simple: "All you need is two legs." He emphasizes that pace doesn't matter. "Some walk, some run, some run and walk. You don’t have to run fast... sometimes, you don’t need to run at all!".

πŸ“Œ Want to become a guide like Colin?
Achilles Melbourne is part of Achilles Australia, with chapters nationwide in Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra, Adelaide, and Geelong. Whether you run, jog, or walk, you have what it takes to be a guide!
