Loxton Mardi Gras Loxton celebrates its 66th Mardi Gras on 25th & 26th February 2023 with the theme “Harvest”.

Loxton's 70th Mardi Gras Family Festival is one of Australia's longest-running community parades and provides an opportunity to come together and celebrate the town and greater district. The Mardi Gras is a family fun day, with money raised going towards community projects. Highlights on the Saturday include a pageant of floats (around 50-60), food and market stalls, children’s entertainment, band performances and the crowning of the ambassadors. After the event you could also visit the Loxton Pioneer Playground and the Loxton Historical Village. Sunday morning attend the Appreciation Service at the Rotunda acknowledging volunteers also highlighting a World War II nurse commemorated by a local street name, and various displays.

The future of the Loxton Mardi Gras is at a crossroads, with the committee urgently seeking new members to help keep this much-loved community event alive.

Following the 2026 AGM, no new volunteers joined the committee, leaving it below the minimum number of members required. With several long-serving members preparing to retire, 2027 could be the final Loxton Mardi Gras unless new people step forward now. If you have skills in leadership, events, logistics, communications, or simply a passion for supporting your community, the committee would love to hear from you. Most members contribute just a few hours each week in the months leading up to the parade.

The 2027 theme is "Community Is..." — and now is the perfect opportunity to show what community really means.

Loxton Mardi Gras Committee Calls for New Members – Without Them, 2027 May Be the Final Parade!

The Loxton Mardi Gras Committee is urgently seeking new members after no new volunteers nominated at the 2026 AGM. With only six active members — below the constitutional minimum of eight — and several long-serving members retiring, the future of the event is now at risk.

Key roles remain vacant, including Chairperson and two general committee positions. Without new volunteers stepping forward soon, the Mardi Gras may not be able to continue beyond 2027.
Acting Chairperson Chris Sheahan said the committee is committed to responsible governance and long-term sustainability. “We’re disappointed no new volunteers came forward, but we must plan for a sustainable future.”

The committee is seeking people with skills in leadership, project management, events, logistics, communications, or community engagement. Experience would be useful, but commitment is key.
Most members contribute only a few hours per week for 2–3 months leading up to the parade, held on the last Saturday in February.

Chris added: “If we don’t get new members soon, we’ll lose the chance for mentoring — meaning 2027 will most likely be our final Mardi Gras. Please contact me by the 20th of August.”

The 2027 parade theme is “Community Is….’’

Help Shape the Future of the Loxton Mardi Gras 📢!

As we look ahead to the Loxton Mardi Gras’ 70th anniversary in 2027, we’re inviting new community members to get involved and help lead this iconic event into the future.

The Loxton Mardi Gras Committee is currently seeking people interested in joining the committee, with key roles including Chairperson and Event Coordinator open for nomination at this year’s AGM.

Sunday 31st May
2.00pm
The Loxton Club - 27-29 Bookpurnong Terrace, Loxton SA

Whether you have plenty of experience or simply want to lend a hand, everyone is welcome. The committee is working towards a more flexible and supportive structure to make volunteering achievable for busy people.

Acting Chairperson Chris Sheahan said the focus is on ensuring the Mardi Gras remains strong for future generations through fresh ideas, strong leadership, and good succession planning.

We’re also looking for community-minded “Friends of Mardi Gras” to assist around parade time — even a small contribution can make a big difference.

Come along, ask questions, and see how you can be part of the future of the Loxton Mardi Gras.
