Congratulations Sheridan. Well deserved
Congratulations to Legend Sheridan Holland
On Thursday at the AGM Sheridan was inducted into the association legend status.
This is a little of Sheridan’s history.
Sheridan began his sheaf tossing career at Mannum on 26 March 1988, competing in an unregistered Novice event where he achieved a throw of 10½ metres to win — the first of many victories to come.
Just six months later, at the Adelaide Royal Show, he tossed 12¾ metres to win the Novice event, eliminating himself from the Novice Class.
On 3 April 1993 at Mt Barker, Sheridan achieved a personal best of 16¾ metres, winning both the Open Handicap and the Championship — the first of many Championship titles that would follow.
Throughout his time, Sheridan has competed at more than 300 shows, participating in over 600 competitions (typically in the Open Handicap and Championship events) across South Australia, New South Wales, the A.C.T., Victoria, and Tasmania. He also proudly represented Australia at the World Championship in Ireland in 2004.
To date, Sheridan has won over 140 Championship titles, including:
• 9 South Australian Titles
• 11 Victorian Titles
• 10 Australian Titles
• 1 World Title
In 1997 at Maryborough, he threw 17½ metres, equalling the then World Record. Unfortunately, the record could not be officially recognised as the sheaf weighed slightly under the prescribed limit after extensive use during the day.
His best throw came at Birdwood Farm Day on 20 May 1996, where he reached 18 metres — a feat that, as legend has it, earned him a bottle of wine in celebration.
Sheridan’s most recent Title win was the Victorian Championship at Stawell on 28 October 2016, marking an impressive 28 years of competitive tossing.
In recognition of his contributions up to that point, Sheridan was awarded Life Membership of the Association on 7 October 2009. Since then, he has remained deeply involved in the administrative side of the sport, serving as a member of the Committee of Management.
Sheridan was instrumental in reinstating Sheaf Tossing at Loxton after a ten-year absence, even having his own poles made for use at the event. The Australian Championship was successfully held there in 2019, followed by the World Championship in 2024. Sheridan invested significant time and effort in securing sponsorships and reaching out to overseas Sheaf Tossers. Unfortunately, there were no international competitors able to attend, but the event was nonetheless a great success and a testament to his commitment and hard work.
Now, 37 years after his first toss in 1988, Sheridan continues to be actively involved in the sport — both as a competitor and as a dedicated contributor behind the scenes.
