What does Cashmere look like?

Where to source Cashmere breeding stock?? Cashmere does can be hard to find, but there are plentiful options. This is the perfect time of year to look as goats will be in full fleece.

1 Rangeland does can be great. They often already produce a small amount of high quality Cashmere.

2 Boer does are Ok. They are domesticated and some produce Cashmere, although it tends to be a bit coarse - 18 microns or so.

3 Dairy does are OK. They tend to be super fine but only produce tiny amounts of Cashmere.

4 Minuature goats are OK, some produce good Cashmere. Pygmy goats are OK too.

5 Angoras are generally not good foundation stock as the fibre they produce is well outside the Cashmere fibre diameter range and the type is different too.

Then source a high quality Cashmere buck that has been fleece tested to show fineness and production.

A nine year old grey doe. She’s been fleece tested every year and shown to produce 500 grams of cashmere at 15.5 to 16 microns every year.

Grey goats generally produce white cashmere after dehairing.
