This Saturday 11 am at Banjup Hall, we will be presenting a session on black cockatoo conservation for the local community. Come and learn about the work we do supporting W.A.‘s endemic Black cockatoos, and how every member of the community can contribute to bear outcomes. And of course meet some of our feathered friends. Free to attend RSVP details below.

A couple of weeks ago we had international visitors and friends enjoy a sneak preview of our almost completed new facility. With a soon to be announced funded major conservation project in the wings, we welcomed Jasmine and friends to learn about the challenges WA’s Carnabys Cockatoos are facing at the hands of progress. With our educational birds enjoying some flight time, our guests enjoyed some up close encounters while discussing the project and how it will assist the recovery of the species through habitat restoration.

This week we’ve brought together a collaboration of organisations for conservation. Recently the Claremont Men’s Shed crew did an incredible job fabricating 20 of our artificial Hollow designs. This week we began installing some of these hollows in a trial to gauge reception from the local population of Carnaby’s in Neerabup. With Perths housing crisis and more land cleared for development. It’s great to see organisations like the Wanneroo Golf Club embarking on conservation measures to apply a mixed use strategy to their incredible facility. With the birds feeding on priority species at the golf course and utilising the man-made water sources for drinking we hope that this site will serve them well for raising future generations and adding back to the population.

A big thanks to Mick & Michelle Hayes and all of the members at Wanneroo golf course along with Peter Panek and the team out at the Claremont Men’s Shed.

Today we hosted a couple of Bunnings VIPs Jaque and Kirsty whom made the trip out to Bindoon to have a sneak preview of our new facility. Both passionate Animal advocates we met these lovely ladies at the Perth Garden show a few weeks ago when they enquired as to how they could assist our cause.

We’re very confident they left today on a high after some wonderful interactions with our educational cockatoos and a few ideas on a collaboration in the near future.

We look forward to bringing you more updates on this collaboration, thanks so much Kirsty, Jaque and Bunnings!

Join us for an important (and free!) evening focused on the future of responsible cat ownership and wildlife protection.

📅 Wednesday 13 May
⏰ 6:00–8:00 pm (talk starts 6:30)
📍 City West Lotteries House, West Perth + online option

With upcoming changes to the State Cat Act, local governments will soon have more power to introduce laws like cat containment and other measures that protect cats, wildlife, and communities. Now is the time to understand what’s coming and how you can help make it happen where you live.

Featuring Dr Bruce Webber, he’rs from a leading conservation expert on how effective local cat laws can be implemented, and how community groups can drive real change.

Whether your area already has cat laws or not, there’s more that can be done. This session will show you how.

Light refreshments provided from 6pm.

Please let us know that you are coming along. You can either RSVP here: https://www.bushlandperth.org.au/event/amending-the-cat-act/ or else email [email protected].

If you can’t make it to West Perth, you can join us online via Zoom. Please email [email protected] to request the Zoom link.

Incredible to see the big Carnabys sculpture is on the road and headed to Moora. It’s been a testament to the incredible resolve of the people involved to fight the system, raise the money and get this incredible sculpture here. We look forward to celebrating with the Moora community and Wally Kerkhof at the official opening of this incredible sculpture.

We've had our 1st Big Carnabys sculpture truck spotter 🤩🤩 Sarah C just sent a message and said "Thought I was seeing things when I was traveling beside the truck going over the Towoomba Bypass but caught up with the truck at the servo half an hour out of Millmerrin QLD. Really hope that more projects like these are taken on to highlight our wildlife for the upcoming games. Myself and our friends are bird lovers and think that these are absolutely lovely"

Anyone spotting the truck, send us a message and/or tag or maybe say hello to Erich the driver too. Or maybe surprise him with a hug/handshake/fist pump 😊 he's heading this route

A fantastic couple of days in the trees completing a project for the City of Bunbury. We were contacted by Bunbury‘s environment and sustainability team to install artificial Cockatoo Tubes along with some supplied habitat boxes to support the local wildlife in various reserves around our beautiful second city.

Born in Carey Park,Bunbury, this Carnaby Crusader loves coming home and seeing how this wonderful city is able to enhance it public areas while retaining solid areas of natural habitat for our three species of Southwest black cockatoos. While exploring the reserves we located an area with active natural hollows and even had a family of a Baudin’s cockatoos investigating our presence.

Thanks to community stewards Kyra and Margaret for your assistance and local knowledge of local reserves. And a big thanks to Claire Palmer and the team at City of Bunbury for looking after country!
We were incredibly impressed with City of Bunbury‘s waste water system which is used to create and support an incredible microhabitat of native grasses, rushes and some incredible young specimens of Hakea petiolaris! Simply stunning and so waterwise!!!

Apologies to my Cousins Kylie, Tracey, Kerry, Joanne, Karen and Geoff! One of these days I’ll have enough time to come and catch up!

A big shout out to Christine and the team at Padbury Community Garden Inc, for sponsoring the last of three new artificial Cockatoo tube installations along with monitoring camera. This new addition will support the existing breeding population of Carnaby’s cockatoo’s throughout Yellagonga Regional Park, while also providing valuable data as to investigations from all local and our target species. With a high number of Corellas present for most of the year in the region, Carnaby’s rarely get a look in for any available natural hollows. Fingers crossed for some positive outcomes for the new real estate and black cockatoos.
Thanks also to Bryan Saunders and DBCA for supporting this community project.

Last week we hosted a workshop during school holidays at the Ellenbrook youth Centre to engage the local community and assisted with building five artificial tubes. All of our attendees were very enthusiastic and after our educational session providing an insight to the status of our 3 South West Black cockatoo species, all participants were keen to get on the tools! While while our educational ambassadors watched on and eventually decided on the best build, as a team in a community we built five artificial tubes, one of which will be installed on a Bullsbrook property adjoining a location with incredible success in recent years. A big thanks to Rebecca and the team at EYC for hosting and funding the installation, and City of Swan for funding the session. Well done to mother and daughter team Meg and Tia for their outstanding build!
