🏆 AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE!
What a night for Lorne at the 2026 LSV Awards of Excellence!

A huge congratulations to Peter Van Deuren, named LSV Official of the Year! 👏

Pete has contributed countless hours to Junior, Senior and Surfboat Competition supporting our Lorne Boaties, as well as our own Powercor Pier to Pub and Mountain to Surf. His dedication to surf lifesaving is truly exceptional, and we’re incredibly proud that Pete has also been named Deputy Referee for the 2026 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships.

While Pete is enjoying a well-deserved break overseas, Kev stepped in to accept the award on his behalf. 👏

We were also incredibly proud to see Lorne SLSC awarded the President’s Certificate, recognising the club’s work providing refuge, rescue and recovery to our community during the summer’s Great Ocean Road flash floods.

Our wonderful Lorne Nippers Program was also a finalist for Nipper Program of the Year. Congratulations to our friends at Bluewater Swim School, finalists for Swim and Survive Partner of the Year.

We are incredibly proud of everyone recognised and nominated, and deeply grateful to every member who gives their time, energy and expertise to Lorne Surf Lifesaving Club and the Surf Coast community.

From Patrol, Water Safety and Events to Committee, Mentors, Officials, Athletes, Team Managers, Coaches and so many more — thank you. ❤️💛

What an incredible community to be part of!

🌊 Thank You, Heath Armstrong ❤️💛
During his three-year presidency and throughout many years as an active patrol member, Heath Armstrong has strengthened Lorne SLSC through outstanding leadership, community partnerships, youth development and emergency response.
His legacy includes leading the club's response during the January floods, expanding Bronze Medallion pathways for Lorne P–12 students, developing and mentoring adult Bronze leaders, supporting our competition team, remaining an active patrol member, fostering partnerships with organisations such as the CFA, supporting the Gunbalanya Program and building stronger connections between the club and the wider community.
Heath's leadership, commitment and willingness to always step forward have left Lorne SLSC stronger, more resilient, and well placed for the future.
On behalf of everyone at Lorne SLSC, thank you for your incredible service and dedication. Your impact will be felt for many years to come and we look forward to your continued involvement around the club.
👏 Please join us in thanking Heath for his outstanding contribution to Lorne Surf Life Saving Club.

The man, myth and legend! Dr Peter Atkinson, a true Lorne local legend whose dedication to the Lorne Surf Life Saving Club spans over 50 years. From his early days sitting on the beach offering medical advice during the Pier to Pub to his ongoing commitment today, Dr Pete has witnessed the club's growth and created lifelong connections with its community. With his unwavering commitment and passion for the club's mission, Dr Pete is a cherished figure in Lorne, embodying the spirit of service and community that the surf lifesaving club represents.

How are you connected to the Lorne SLSC?
Initially I got involved in the mid 1970’s because my children joined the nippers program. For many years we would sit and observe the lifesavers from the club, but it wasn’t until the nippers came on board that I was involved with the club. Initially I just joined as a parent, and as there weren’t that many parents around the club in those days and they knew I was a medico, I used to get asked about any ailments that people had, and gradually became a bit more involved.
When Pier to Pub started in 1981 they asked if I’d like to be involved a bit more. I used to just sit on the beach, and someone would call me over the loudspeaker system if they needed me. As time went on, they said: “We’ll give you a T-shirt and you can come and actually be at the surf club for anything that’s needed”, so it was just me sitting outside the surf club for a while.
They called me during patrols and things too if they needed to talk to me. They don’t as much these days, but still every now and then!

What is your favourite event at the club?
I suppose I’d have to say the Pier to Pub.

What makes the community within the club so special?
It’s a very friendly place with like-minded people, and I enjoy it because it’s a service to the community and anybody who gets involved can help out in that situation. I have met some wonderful people through the club, and some of them have become my very good friends.

What is your favourite memory that you've had as a member of the club?
I think my favourite memory would have to be watching my five grandchildren do nippers. They all enjoyed it very much and were well involved with it all for many years from Under 7’s through to SRC. Beyond that they are all Bronze Medallion holders, some with Silver and Gold Medallions too, one being a lifeguard!

What about the Lorne SLSC inspires you?
That it’s a service organisation performing an essential service, and if the club wasn’t there to patrol and educate, there would be a lot more casualties on the beach.

What is the easiest way to get more involved within the community?
The easiest way for people to get more involved in the community of the club is to volunteer. If it’s your kids involved, you can volunteer with nippers, and otherwise just get involved with the events that the club puts on! There are of course the Mountain to Surf and the Pier to Pub, but there are other events too that anyone can be involved with. What I’m liking to see now is how many of the parents are getting their Bronze Medallion and patrolling and all sorts of things, so they are really getting much more involved in the club.

Your feedback is incredibly valuable and will help us continue to improve the program, celebrate what's working well, and identify opportunities to make Nippers even better for everyone.

Help shape the future of Nippers 🌊

We're inviting Nippers parents, carers and volunteers to share their feedback as Surf Life Saving Australia and our State and Territory Centres work together to better understand the Nippers experience.

Whether you're a parent, Age Manager, Coach, Junior Activities volunteer or Club Administrator, we'd love to hear what's working well and where we can improve.

The survey takes less than 10 minutes, is completely anonymous, and your feedback will help strengthen the Nippers program for families and clubs across Australia 📝

Lorne SLSC with Tofino SLSC
Great to see one of our Lorne Surf Lifesaving Club young leaders Kiara McKerron continuing their lifesaving journey while working abroad, sharing their skills and teaching tube rescue and racing techniques on the other side of the world.
Small world - Tofino has two members who did their Bronze in Lorne.
A reminder that the skills friendships and values learned at Lorne travel far beyond our beach. ❤️💛
Wherever you are in the wold lifesaving connections are never far away.

Last Patrol for the Season! 🌊
A huge thank you and congratulations to our Club Captain Nick Murnane. Your leadership, commitment and steady presence have made a genuine impact both on and off the beach. You’ve led by example every step of the way, setting the standard for others to follow.
From your early days in Nippers through to SRC, Bronze, and Silver, your journey reflects an incredible dedication to the club. Serving as Patrol Captain (2011–2015), contributing through training and assessing, instructing at Bronze and Silver Camps, mentoring as an Adult Bronze Instructor and representing the club in IRB racing, your contribution has been huge.
A special mention to your Sharkey Award in 2017 — a well-deserved recognition of your impact and commitment.
Thank you for the time, energy and passion you’ve given to the club and the committee. Enjoy a well-earned break and good luck in all future endeavours!
