Thank you Lorne P-12 College for the beautiful display of home made poppies near the Lorne Avenue of Honour Project. See photos attached to this post.
The poppy reminds us of those who lost their lives or suffered in wars, conflicts and peace operations. This tradition began in 1919, after the First World War. The poppy’s popularity stems from the poem In Flanders Fields, written by Canadian medic Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae in 1915. The poem recalls the red poppies on the war graves of soldiers who died on the Western Front in Europe. In Australia, the red poppy is the commemorative flower of remembrance.
On Anzac Day, we also commemorate with rosemary sprigs as a symbol of the first Anzacs at Gallipoli.
