Desert Channels Ensuring the sustainability and condition of soil, water, pasture, biodiversity and natural resources in the Desert Channels region.

Desert Channels Queensland is the natural resource management organisation for the largest catchment area in the state – the Queensland section of the Lake Eyre Basin. We partner with landholders, government and communities to ensure the long-term sustainability and condition of our region’s soil, water, pasture, biodiversity and natural resources. Working across 51,000,000 hectares of Western Queensland, we roll up our sleeves and assist our partners revitalise springs, develop maps, restore bare grassland, stop the spread of w**ds and invasives, and manage the Desert Channels’ rich soils, grasslands, floodplains and clay dunes.

Looking for a job in Western Queensland? Two positions are currently available at Desert Channels Queensland.

🌱 Field Crew Officer
We’re looking for someone to start as soon as possible and join our on-ground Field Team, working across properties and sites throughout the DCQ region. The role includes w**d and pest control, fencing, ATV operation, land management, seed collecting, welding, grading and more.

📱 Communications Officer
We’re looking for a creative and proactive content-maker to share DCQ’s work through photography, articles, social media, videos, media releases and more. Suitable for an entry-level or experienced content-maker.

Monitoring with a little help from the locals 🐄🌾

Of course, when you’re working out in the field, you’re never quite alone! This curious local decided to make an appearance and even stopped to have a little play with the monitoring tape while the team got on with the job.

Our team was out collecting valuable information to help us understand how these areas are changing over time.

This work plays an important role in understanding the health and condition of our landscapes and helps inform the work we do to support healthy, resilient ecosystems across the Lake Eyre Basin.

Sometimes the best part of fieldwork is seeing what or who you encounter along the way! 🌿

Farewell, Leanne 🤝✨

After an incredible 24 years as CEO of Desert Channels Queensland, we recently gathered as a team for a farewell lunch to celebrate Leanne and the remarkable contribution she has made to DCQ.

Although we’ll be holding a more formal farewell in the coming months, it was important for our team to come together and mark this special milestone. After 24 years, there is certainly plenty to celebrate, and it’s hard to put into words just how much Leanne will be missed.

Throughout her time at DCQ, Leanne’s leadership, dedication and passion for natural resource management have helped shape the organisation and its work across the region. Her influence has created a lasting legacy that will continue to be felt for years to come.

While it’s sad to see Leanne move on, we’re incredibly grateful for everything she has given to DCQ, our team and the communities we work alongside.

As we farewell Leanne, we’re also looking ahead to an exciting new chapter. In the coming weeks, we’ll welcome our incoming CEO, David Phelps, to the DCQ team. We’re excited to have David on board and look forward to introducing him to our community.

Wrapping Up Our Workshops with a Special Milestone! 🌱🎉

Our workshops with Darryl Hill have officially wrapped up, with our final workshop at Barkly Downs marking a special milestone, Darryl’s 400th workshop!

Across the workshops, we had 40 attendees who got out in the paddock to put theory into practice. Participants learnt to read the landscape, understand water flow and put erosion management techniques into practice, including surveying drainage structures and constructing a check bank.

For many attending their first workshop, the practical component brought the theory to life and showed just how much difference good planning can make.

A big thank you to everyone who attended and to those who hosted our workshops along the way. We appreciate your support and involvement! 👏

Admin hits the field! 🌱

Our admin Janet recently swapped the desk for the field, joining the team to lend a hand with some soil sampling.

While Janet’s usual role keeps things running behind the scenes, it was great to see her get out and experience some of the hands-on work our team does across the region.

It’s always great to see our team stepping outside their usual roles, learning something new and getting a closer look at the work happening on the ground.

On the Ground with Darryl Hill 🚜

Our workshops with Darryl Hill are underway, with Round 1 kicking off in Glenthompson, Longreach.

Participants explored why slowing water is key to protecting infrastructure and keeping valuable soil where it belongs.

From learning about erosion control structures and surveying techniques to getting boots on the ground and pe***ng out their own whoa boys and drainage structures, the workshop was all about putting theory into practice.

Protecting soil starts with understanding how water moves across the landscape. These workshops give landholders practical, proven techniques to manage erosion, protect infrastructure and support healthy waterways.

A big thank you to everyone who came along and helped make the day possible!
