Desert Channels Queensland is the natural resource management organisation for the largest catchment area in the state – the Queensland section of the Lake Eyre Basin. We partner with landholders, government and communities to ensure the long-term sustainability and condition of our region’s soil, water, pasture, biodiversity and natural resources. ensland, we roll up our sleeves and assist our partners revitalise springs, develop maps, restore bare grassland, stop the spread of w**ds and invasives, and manage the Desert Channels’ rich soils, grasslands, floodplains and clay dunes.

DCQ, alongside Darryl Hill, will be chatting about all things erosion, brickwork and grading. We are just one week away from hosting our three workshops across the region this August!

These workshops will provide valuable insights into managing erosion, improving land condition and implementing solutions that support long-term outcomes.

Mastering Erosion Control with Darryl Hill 🚜

DCQ, alongside grader guru and erosion control specialist Darryl Hill, is hosting three workshops across the region this August.

With more than four decades of experience in soil conservation, Darryl has worked with landholders across Australia and is passionate about sharing his knowledge on cost-effective, safe and low-maintenance erosion control solutions.

These workshops will provide valuable insights into managing erosion, improving land condition and implementing solutions that support long-term outcomes.

Taking skills to new heights 🚁

Our Project Officers, Ben and Megan, have recently completed their drone training, achieving their Remote Pilot Licence (RePL), Aeronautical Radio Operator Certificate (AROC), and Sub 25kg upgrade.

This means they are now qualified to operate drones up to 25kg, adding another valuable skill to support our projects through improved monitoring, data collection and field activities across Western Queensland.

Great work, Ben and Megan, on achieving this qualification and strengthening the team’s capabilities! 👏

🌺 What’s the deal with pimelea poppy?

Have you spotted this striking red flower across the Desert Channels region?

Pimelea haematostachya is a native Queensland plant recognised by its vibrant red flowers and deep-green foliage. It can be found growing in grasslands and a range of soil types across the region.

While this native plant adds a splash of colour to the landscape, it’s important to be aware of the wider Pimelea family, as some species can be toxic to livestock when consumed.

BIOSECURITY ALERT 🐦‍⬛

Something to be aware of if you keep poultry, work with birds, or regularly observe wildlife.

👉 The gist:
Queensland has recorded its first suspect positive detection of H5 bird flu in a wild bird following initial testing.

🦠 What it means:
Further testing is underway, with confirmatory results expected in the coming days. There have been no detections in poultry and no evidence of large-scale animal deaths in Queensland.

🌿 Biosecurity advice:

- While NRM staff are not responsible for diagnosing or managing H5 bird flu, they play a vital role in early detection, surveillance and reporting.

- With 29 regional offices across Queensland, regional NRM organisations form a broad surveillance network that strengthens the state’s biosecurity preparedness.

- Regional NRM organisations work on the ground across Queensland every day and are well placed to identify unusual bird mortality and report suspected H5 bird flu cases through the appropriate channels.

👀 Spotted!

Our team came across this little visitor while out in the field across the DCQ region! 🦔

The short-beaked echidna is one of Australia’s most recognisable native animals and one of only five living species of monotremes (egg-laying mammals) in the world.

Echidnas are well adapted to life in our region, using their claws to dig for ants and termites and their tongues to collect their next meal. Their spines help protect them from predators, making them a unique and important part of the local wildlife we share the landscape with.

It’s always a great reminder of the incredible native species found across the DCQ region. 📸
