South Tarawa, Kiribati – A Volleyball Coaching Training Program was successfully conducted this week for beginner Physical Education (P.E.) teachers at Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) across South Tarawa and were held at TUC 1 Maneaba. The initiative aimed to build the capacity of teachers in delivering volleyball skills, rules, and safe training practices to students, while also promoting the sport’s growth at the grassroots level and especially to engage and promote health to the students both inside and outside the classroom.

The training was organized by the Ministry of Education, Educait program funded by DFAT Australia, in collaboration with MWYSSA ( Sport Division) and the Kiribati National Volleyball Federation, provided participating teachers with both theoretical and practical sessions, focusing on basic coaching principles, rules of the game, safety and injury prevention, and effective team management.

Participants were introduced to fundamental volleyball skills such as serving, passing, setting, spiking, and blocking, along with lesson planning techniques for school programs. Emphasis was also placed on child protection in sports and encouraging inclusivity to ensure both boys and girls are given equal opportunities to enjoy and excel in volleyball.
KNVF highlighted the importance of empowering teachers as key role models in schools:

“By equipping P.E. teachers with coaching knowledge, we are strengthening the foundation of volleyball in Kiribati. This will not only benefit students in schools but also develop future athletes for national competitions.”
Teachers expressed their appreciation for the training, noting that it boosted their confidence in managing volleyball classes and provided them with the tools to introduce the sport in a fun and structured way.

This initiative marks an important step toward raising the standard of sports education in Kiribati and ensuring volleyball continues to be a sport that inspires and unites communities.
