Yesterday, Parkinson's Queensland was honoured to be invited by the Loganlea Community Centre to present a session on What is Parkinson's? and the work we do to support Queenslanders living with Parkinson's.

We were incredibly fortunate to be joined by two members of our community, Scott and Jan, who generously shared their lived experiences. They spoke openly about the challenges Parkinson's can bring to everyday life, including the impact on work, family, lifestyle, healthcare and overall wellbeing.

The session was both informative and eye-opening, and we were deeply encouraged by the enthusiasm and support shown by those who attended. Community members even offered to help distribute Parkinson's Queensland information to their local GPs, an incredible gesture that will help our small team connect with more doctors, patients and families, improving awareness, access to support and understanding of Parkinson's across our community.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended and for your commitment to supporting people living with Parkinson's. Your encouragement and willingness to help means so much to us.

A very special thank you to Scott and Jan for volunteering their time and sharing their personal journeys. Your voices help create greater understanding and hope for others navigating Parkinson's.

Together, we can build a more informed, connected and supportive community.

💜 Want to help? Download and share our Parkinson's Queensland information booklet with your local GP, community centre, library or healthcare provider. Together, we can help more Queenslanders access the information, support and services they need.

Parkinson’s is far more than tremors.

Behind every diagnosis is a deeply personal journey — of resilience, grief, adaptation, courage and determination to keep living life on your own terms.

Thank you to the Toowoomba Chronicle (The Chronicle) sharing the stories of Kim, Gail and Carol, and helping shine a light on the realities of living with Parkinson’s disease. 💜

The article also highlights the incredible work of Carol Chalmers, Coordinator of the Toowoomba Parkinson’s Support Group. After years of attending the group alongside her husband Joe following his Parkinson’s diagnosis, Carol stepped up to help lead and support the growing local community. Today, the group regularly welcomes between 90 and 110 people through meetings, activities and connection opportunities for people living with Parkinson’s and their families.

From changes in mobility and speech to the invisible symptoms many people never see, Parkinson’s impacts every person differently. Yet through support, exercise, community connection and determination, people living with Parkinson’s continue to show incredible strength every single day.

As Gail shared:
“I’ve got Parkinson’s, Parkinson’s doesn’t have me.”

And as Kim reminded us:
“There is life with Parkinson’s.”

Thank you to the Toowoomba Parkinson’s Support Group for creating connection, support and understanding within the local community.

A special thank you this National Volunteer Week to our amazing Support Group Coordinators and their teams across Queensland who volunteer their time to support the community. 💜

More than 30 Parkinson’s support groups operate across the state, helping people living with Parkinson’s and their families find connection, friendship, understanding and support close to home.

These groups are made possible by volunteers who generously give their time to organise meetings, welcome new members, coordinate activities and create safe and supportive community spaces.

The impact you make in your local communities is truly meaningful and we are incredibly thankful for everything you do.

Did you know Parkinson’s Queensland is powered by a team of just four staff supporting communities across the entire state? 💜

Fiona, Rachael, Kristine and Gaybriella work across administration, member support, events, fundraising, education, advocacy and community connection to help support people living with Parkinson’s throughout Queensland.

While our team may be small, the impact of our volunteer network is enormous.

From our PQI Ambassadors, PQI Management Committee and dedicated Support Group Coordinators, to event volunteers, office support volunteers and everyone who generously gives their time behind the scenes — Parkinson’s Queensland simply could not do what we do without you.

From local support groups to community events and awareness activities, volunteers help us extend our reach far beyond what our small team could achieve alone.

This National Volunteer Week, we want to say a heartfelt THANK YOU to every volunteer supporting the Parkinson’s community across Queensland. Your time, compassion and dedication make a real difference to people living with Parkinson’s and their families every single day.

We thank you. 💜
