Ever travelled in rural Australia?

Then Rural Road Safety Month is for you! And it's fast approaching.

We are urging everyone to get involved this August to spread the message of road safety on rural roads!

More than two-thirds of Australian road fatalities occur on regional and remote roads. These roads often feature long, monotonous stretches, undivided lanes, and higher speed limits.

Fatigue and the casual “she’ll be right” driving mindset are massive contributors to head-on and single-vehicle crashes. Pull over and rest every two hours.

Rural road safety month applies to us all. From work to road trips – we all have a part to play in making the roads safer for all.

Rural Road Safety Month is created to educate and spread awareness through everything we do.

We’ve got ready-to-use free resources, media calls and events, fun activities for you to host at school, work, home or in community groups and ARSF research for you to use anywhere and everywhere!

Teen independence starts before they get their licence.

Every day, young people make real decisions on and around the road, walking, riding, travelling as passengers… and sometimes taking risks.

That’s why ARSF created RoadSet, presented by : a free, interactive online road safety learning experience designed for Year 9 (and usable across Years 7–12) that builds safer decision‑making through real‑life scenarios, short videos and choice-based activities.

In just one lesson, students can:
- Recognise risks in real road situations
- Understand how everyday decisions impact safety
- Practise how to respond and choose safer options
- Teachers: Curriculum‑aligned support is available (V9 Years 9–10).

Parents/carers: Share this with your school, these skills matter in the secondary years when independence ramps up.

Today, we say thank you.

With more than 14 million Triple Zero (000) calls made across Australia in 2025 alone, the pressure on our first responders continues to grow.

One in three first responders experiences high or very high psychological distress, and more than half have been deeply affected by traumatic events on the job.
Today, on Thank a First Responder Day, we recognise the incredible people who step forward when others need help most.

At the Australian Road Safety Foundation, we are especially grateful to the first responders who attend and support our events, standing alongside us to raise awareness, share their experiences, and help drive safer outcomes on our roads. Your presence makes our message stronger and our communities safer.

This national day, led by Fortem Australia, reminds us that appreciation matters. Across the country, Australians are coming together to say Thank you!

Tag a first responder you know in the comments!
Share a message of support in the comments with a yellow heart!
Tell a story about a life saving moment you had with a first responder!

This Men’s Mental Health Week, we want to shine a light on the importance of self-care and road safety.

Road trauma affects thousands of Australians. So far this year, more than 70% of road fatalities have been men (BITRE, 2026).

Take some time this week to focus on yourself with these ideas.

❄️ June Driving: Stay Safe on Winter Roads

As winter sets in, June brings a unique set of driving hazards, especially on regional and rural roads. Being aware of these risks can help keep you and others safe.

🦘 Wildlife on the Move

June coincides with increased wildlife movement, with kangaroos and wallabies most active at dawn, dusk and nighttime. [theconversation.com]
Low-light conditions make them harder to spot, increasing the risk of collisions, particularly on rural roads. [theconversation.com]
👉 Slow down, stay alert and scan the roadside — if you see one animal, expect more nearby.

🌅 Reduced Visibility & Sun Glare

Winter brings shorter days and harsher glare from a low sun, making it harder to see clearly. [racv.com.au]
These conditions reduce your reaction time and make it harder to judge distance. [racv.com.au]
👉 Drive to the conditions, increase your following distance and always use your lights when needed.

🌫️ Frost, Fog & Slippery Roads

Cold mornings and changing weather can create:
•Fog that limits visibility
•Frost and icy patches that reduce traction
•Wet roads that increase stopping distances [sharpdrive.co]
👉 Slow down, drive smoothly and leave extra space between vehicles.

🚗 June Long Weekend Traffic

June’s long weekend often means more cars on the road, with people travelling to regional areas. [daily.raa.com.au]
Busy roads combined with winter conditions increase crash risk — especially if vehicles aren’t properly maintained. [daily.raa.com.au]
👉 Before you travel, consider a vehicle check or service — stopping safely starts with a safe car, so head to Pedders.

💛 Every Choice Matters

From wildlife to weather, winter roads demand more from every driver.
Small actions like slowing down, staying alert and preparing your vehicle can make a life-saving difference — for you, your passengers, and everyone on the road.

🫶 This Fatality Free Friday, we’re joining Australian Road Safety Foundation to help drive change on our roads.

Every number on the road toll is a story cut short. In 2025, 1,314 lives were lost on Australian roads, each one a life that didn’t get to continue.

This year’s campaign, Every Page Matters, is a reminder that the choices we make every day can shape how those stories unfold.

On May 29, be part of the change.
