Fantastic news from Activate Australia’s Skills! In last week’s federal budget, the government announced a $85.2 million commitment to make skills recognition faster and more affordable for migrant trade workers - a major step in reforming a system that has been “frozen” for far too long.
But the journey doesn’t stop there. While this funding will help tradespeople contribute to building the homes Australia needs, many highly qualified migrant teachers, nurses, and engineers are still facing expensive and confusing barriers. The good news? The government has also committed to consulting on a Skills Migration Commissioner, the next big step towards fairer recognition for all licensed professions.

Look our for more updates from Activate Australia’s Skills about how you can get involved in the consultation and help strengthen the call for action. For now, check out their full media response and join us in celebrating this important first move towards making skills recognition faster, fairer, and more affordable across the board. Let’s keep working together to unlock Australia’s full potential!

Jolie completed MultiLink’s ‘famous’ Cert I Hospitality Traineeship a few months ago. This was Jolie’s first entry into paid employment in Australia after arriving from a large Ugandan refugee camp in 2023. Originally born in Congo, Jolie was leading a “happy life” and working as an Accountant until the outbreak of war in her homeland that tipped her world upside down.

Fleeing the conflict, Jolie and her husband sought in an over-crowded refuge in a camp in Uganda, where she gave birth to two beautiful girls. Jolie's life in the refugee camp was challenging with a lack of food, feeling unsafe and surrounded by uncertainty.

Sadly, Jolie’s life took an even more tragic turn when her young husband passed away. Following this heartbreaking loss, Jolie’s in-laws, living in Australia, were able to sponsor Jolie and her daughters giving them a chance to start a new life.

Today, Jolie and her daughters love living in Australia. Jolie says, “I am so thankful to MultiLink and the Australian Government for helping me”.

Jolie has a true passion for cooking and overcame her shyness to really shine throughout our Cert I Hospitality project. Then she put the ‘cream on the cake’ at the end of her Traineeship when she gained a fulltime role as the sole cook at a school for disadvantaged girls in Sunnybank!

We are so happy for Jolie and being able to impact people's lives are the reason we come to work each day.😊

MultiLink was proud to host another powerful Logan Pasifika & Māori Community Network Meeting yesterday afternoon, bringing together agencies, providers and key stakeholders committed to better outcomes for our Māori and Pasifika families.

This forum focused on NDIS Access, with valuable insights shared by Carers Queensland, Karakan and Queensland Family and Child Commission. Together, we explored the real barriers our communities face when navigating the National Disability Insurance Scheme, particularly around access, evidence requirements and culturally responsive engagement.

The breakout discussions were honest, solutions focused and grounded in lived experience. These gatherings continue to strengthen relationships, deepen collaboration and ensure our services are better aligned to the needs of our people.

Fa’afetai, ngā mihi nui and thank you to everyone who contributed.

Thank you to everyone who attended, and to the organisers and volunteers who made the day such a success. A big mihi (shout-out) to Te Korowai Aroha for leading with heart and bringing community together.

Together, we continue to build connection, respect, and inclusion across cultures 🤝❤️

💛 Community in action at MultiLink 💛
The past few months at our Neighbourhood Centre have been filled with connection, culture, and care. From our Community Leaders and Connect Forum to supporting families during the festive season, it’s been a powerful reminder of what’s possible when community comes together.
We’ve loved connecting with so many incredible people and groups, sharing culture, laughter, and practical support when it’s most needed. None of this happens without our generous partners, volunteers, and community members who continue to show up for one another.
We’re also pleased to welcome OoLar as our new full-time Neighbourhood Community Worker, working closely alongside Mary, our Community Connect Worker. If you have any questions about our Neighbourhood Centre or how to get involved, please feel free to reach out to either of them.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed and supported this work. Together, we’re building a stronger, kinder, and more connected community 🤝🌏
