We are looking for volunteers to help us monitor the critically endangered western ringtail possum around Albany!

In March we will be conducting spotlighting in 5 key bush reserves around Albany. Volunteers will walk in pairs along pre-defined 100 m transects with head torches, scanning both sides of the transect for western ringtail possums and recording any sightings on the field data sheet. This fieldwork is walking through thick bush (there are no paths or firebreaks) so volunteers must be comfortable walking on uneven terrain at night. This is a great opportunity to meet like-minded people and see some of the local wildlife, all while actively contributing to the recovery of the western ringtail possum!

No experience is necessary! We can train you up and pair you with an experienced volunteer! All equipment is provided.

Interested or want more information?
Email Renae at [email protected] to register your interest in the March spotlighting season!

This spotlighting season is part of the Urban Western Ringtail Possum project, which is a collaboration between South Coast NRM, Oyster Harbour Catchment Group, Torbay Catchment Group, UWA-Albany, City of Albany, Southern Aboriginal Corporation and Cat Laws and Wildlife Survival Group and is supported by South Coast NRM through funding from the Australian Government Saving Native Species Program.

A community celebration of Indian culture, tradition, and togetherness.

Albany will sparkle this spring as the Diwali Festival of Lights returns in 2025 with two vibrant community celebrations – and everyone is invited.

There’ll be delicious Indian street food β€” from fragrant curries to crisp, fresh dosas β€” plus market stalls, henna artists, and colourful rangoli-making. Kids (and grown-ups) will love Jamie the Clown, family activities, and a chance to meet our newest festival Elephant mascot. As the sun sets, an Indian DJ will bring the beats and a spectacular sparkler display will light up the night.
