Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research Inspiring health and transforming care with local focus, national significance and global impact

The Institute’s medical research programs have a translational focus, with results from our medical research transformed into direct health benefits. Our research is applied in the form of new medical treatments and therapies in hospitals and health programs for the community. The Institute has over 350 researchers exploring new medical approaches across:
- Cancer (from biology to technology and patient support programs)
- Clinical Sciences (treatments for Diabetes, Stroke, Respiratory and Autoimmune diseases)
- Population & Health Services (studies into Women’s Health, Nursing practices, and Early Childhood)
- Injury & Rehabilitation (rehabilitation for Brain Injury and Orthopaedic surgery)
- Mental Health (therapies for Autism, Schizophrenia, Learning Development Disorders)
- Robotics and Health Technology (redefining eHealth, remote surgery and patient care). In addition to the six research streams, the Ingham Institute provides over 500 Clinical Trials to more than 2,500 patients. We are forefront of the most advanced medical breakthroughs and clinical discoveries and are committed to saving and improving lives. Our facilities enable world-first research, training and technology to be explored and developed. Earlier this week, the Translational Research and Social Innovation (TReSI) team and past staff, led by Distinguished Professor Lynn Kemp, came together at Ingham Institute to reflect on progress, share updates and explore future directions. The meeting was also a wonderful opportunity to welcome our four new team members - Amanda, Angela, Lidija and Clare - and introduce them to the team’s work.

A highlight was learning more about the continued growth of the Maternal Early Childhood Sustained Home-visiting (MECSH) program, which has been supporting families locally in select locations and in some international locations for more than a decade. The discussion highlighted the important role of sustained nurse home visiting in strengthening family wellbeing and improving child and family health outcomes during a child’s critical early years.

Thank you to everyone for the valuable conversations and your ongoing commitment to improving outcomes for children and families. We look forward to the continued growth and impact of MECSH and the broader work of the TReSI team.

We were treated to a great Lunch & Learn session this week at the Ingham Institute with Professor Mary Ann Foglio and Luan da Silva Dias Rabelo from the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil.

Their talks focused on the development and standardisation of herbal medicines, particularly Arrabidaea chica (Fridericia chica) for mucositis treatment, as well as ongoing research into Brazilian medicinal plants and their potential applications in pancreatic cancer.

It was fascinating to see the effectiveness of plant-based treatments and hear first-hand about the journey of taking these products from the laboratory through to approval and market. The discussion offered a unique insight into the challenges and opportunities of translating natural products into real-world therapies.

Congratulations to Dr Ramya Walsan on being awarded Best General Research Oral Presentation at the 2026 Western NSW Health Research Network Research Symposium.

Dr Walsan's award-winning presentation, Rural–Urban Differences in Virtual Oncology Care Use and Associated Patient, Clinical and Service-Related Factors Across Three Australian States, shared findings from the NHMRC Smarter Hospitals Project.

A fantastic achievement and well-deserved recognition of research that is helping improve health equity and access to care.

Congratulations to Agnes Le, Clinical Nurse Consultant, SWS Nursing and Midwifery Research Alliance, who has been awarded a 2026 Nursing Fellowship Grant from Cancer Institute NSW, receiving $250,000 to support her research focused on improving recovery support for people following colorectal surgery.

This prestigious fellowship recognises Agnes' leadership, expertise and dedication to advancing patient care through nursing research. We also acknowledge Professor Josephine Chow, Agnes' sponsor and supervisor for the fellowship, for her guidance, mentorship and support of this important work.

Congratulations to Associate Professor Evan Alexandrou, recipient of the Research Impact and Translation Award at the inaugural South Western Sydney Research Excellence Awards, jointly presented by South Western Sydney Local Health District and the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research. 🎉

An internationally recognised clinician-researcher and Clinical Nurse Consultant at Liverpool Hospital, A/Prof Alexandrou has transformed vascular access through research that directly improves patient safety and clinical care. Helen Goldsack, our Director of Nursing and Midwifery, accepted the award on A/Prof Alexandrou's behalf.

His work has informed national and international standards, advanced nursing practice and influenced how clinicians approach device selection, insertion and management across healthcare settings worldwide.

Congratulations to Dr Kate Short, winner Mid-Career Researcher of the Year Award at the inaugural South Western Sydney Research Excellence Awards, jointly presented by South Western Sydney Local Health District and the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research. 🎉

A Senior Speech Pathologist at Liverpool Hospital, Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney and Adjunct Fellow at Western Sydney University, Kate has spent more than three decades improving outcomes for children and families through research-informed care.

Her collaborative work has led to innovative programs including Dynamic Early Communication Intervention, Launch to School and Transition to School, helping children with communication and developmental challenges thrive. These models, developed in south western Sydney, are now being adopted more broadly across NSW.

Congratulations to Associate Professor Bernadette Brady, recipient of the Equity in Health Research Award at the inaugural South Western Sydney Research Excellence Awards, jointly presented by South Western Sydney Local Health District and the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research. 🎉

A nationally recognised clinician-researcher, A/Prof Brady has dedicated her career to improving health equity through culturally-responsive research and care.

Her work addresses critical gaps in chronic pain management and the inclusion of culturally and linguistically diverse communities in research and healthcare services. Through initiatives such as the Natural Helper multicultural mentoring program, she has championed meaningful consumer and community engagement and co-designed solutions that better reflect the needs of diverse populations.
