The Institute’s medical research programs have a translational focus, with results from our medical research transformed into direct health benefits. Our research is applied in the form of new medical treatments and therapies in hospitals and health programs for the community. The Institute has over 350 researchers exploring new medical approaches across:

- Population & Health Services (studies into Women’s Health, Nursing practices, and Early Childhood)
- Injury & Rehabilitation (rehabilitation for Brain Injury and Orthopaedic surgery)
- Mental Health (therapies for Autism, Schizophrenia, Learning Development Disorders)
- Robotics and Health Technology (redefining eHealth, remote surgery and patient care). In addition to the six research streams, the Ingham Institute provides over 500 Clinical Trials to more than 2,500 patients. We are forefront of the most advanced medical breakthroughs and clinical discoveries and are committed to saving and improving lives. Our facilities enable world-first research, training and technology to be explored and developed. Ultimately we redefine and improve the treatment of disease and inform the nature of care across numerous health conditions.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for An Evening with Professor Dr V. Mohan: Global Perspectives on Diabetes and Health Equity.

We were honoured to hear from Distinguished Professor David Simmons, Professor of Medicine at Western Sydney University and President of the International Diabetes Epidemiology Group, and Professor Dr. V. Mohan, Chief of Diabetology at Dr. Mohan's Diabetes Specialities Centre, whose research explored how South Asian genetics and environmental factors contribute to diabetes risk.

Congratulations to Professor Reema Harrison, Co-Winner of the Health Services Research Association of Australia and New Zealand (HSRAANZ) 2025 Mentor Award, recognising her leadership in health services research and mentorship.

Chief Research Director at Ingham Institute and Head of the Healthcare Engagement and Equity Research team at the Australian Institute of Health Innovation, Professor Harrison is driving change toward more person-centred and equitable healthcare across the globe, with a focus on underserved communities including culturally and linguistically diverse populations and people with intellectual disability.

Beyond her research, she is a generous and impactful mentor to the next generation of researchers.

Introducing the Ingham Institute Postdoctoral Association, a group established to represent and support early and mid-career professionals across the Institute.

The Association is committed to fostering a culture of professional growth by facilitating connections, raising awareness, and delivering targeted initiatives such as Lunch and Learn sessions and other programs designed to support researchers throughout their careers.

Through these efforts, the Association envisions an inclusive community in which all researchers are empowered, valued, recognised, and supported in their current and future endeavours.

About the Speaker: Dr Ashlea Lorenz is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow within the Cancer and Inflammation group at Ingham Institute. She recently completed her PhD at the Centenary Institute and the University of Technology Sydney, where she investigated the immunological mechanisms underlying susceptibility to mycobacterial infection in chronic lung disease, with a particular focus on cystic fibrosis. Her research aimed to identify host-directed therapeutic targets to improve outcomes for patients with treatment-resistant infections. She is currently investigating predictive biomarkers of immunotherapy response across multiple cancer types using liquid biopsy and advanced proteomic imaging approaches. Her research interests span host–pathogen interactions, translational immunology, and precision medicine.

Congratulations to Professor Josephine Chow on this landmark achievement, Global Co-PI of TEACH-PD, the largest peritoneal dialysis trial ever conducted, now published in eClinicalMedicine.

1,462 patients, 42 units and 94 investigators, delivered on time through COVID-19, proving the power of nurse-led research.

The Australian Centre for Cancer Equity (AcCE) is working to make cancer care more accessible wherever you are, ensuring distance is less of a barrier to early diagnosis and treatment.

AcCE is an NSW-led partnership between Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research, South Western Sydney Local Health District and the Cancer Institute NSW.

Congratulations to Professor Geoff Delaney, Head of the Radiation Oncology Academic Unit at Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research and South Western Sydney Local Health District, on being awarded the 2027 ESTRO Honorary Member Award, recognising his exceptional scientific contributions to Radiation Oncology.

Prof Delaney, who is also a Senior Staff Specialist in Radiation Oncology at Liverpool Hospital and former Director of Cancer Services, SWSLHD, continues to make a significant impact on cancer care and research both nationally and internationally.

He was also invited to deliver two plenary presentations at the National Medical Research Council Singapore Research Symposium and accepted a nomination to serve on the National Medical Research Council, Singapore.

An outstanding achievement and a proud moment for Ingham Institute and SWSLHD.
