As we come to the end of Mycology may you might be thinking "I didn't get to any of the great fungi based events in the Central Tablelands this year."

That's OK because Local Land Central Tablelands Local Land Services have this great series "Fungi - The forgotten kingdom".

This well-made 6 part series is all about the incredible diversity of fungi and their role in ecosystems.

Enjoy!

How good are volunteers?

This week is National Volunteer week, and Lithgow Oberon Landcare would like to acknowledge all the hard work that so many volunteers have put into the local community and environment over the past twenty-five years.

Landcare volunteers in Lithgow have planted thousands of trees and removed acres of w**ds over decades along Farmers Creek, Lake Pillans and other areas around the district. Volunteers count birds, frogs and leave out food and water for native animals after bushfires.

Landcare Volunteers attend committee meetings and dedicate thousands of hours of their own time to apply for funding, deliver projects and quietly make where we live as beautiful as it is today.

Volunteering with Landcare is an investment in the future and a great way to get involved with the local community undertaking practical, on ground works.

Volunteers report improvements in their sense of wellbeing as they engage with other people and meaningful improvements to the local environment.

Made in Lithgow, Lithgow Environment Group, Lithgow and Districts Community Nursery

Its Mycology May!

We eat them, they hold soil together, transport water and nutrients, help create habitat and are stunning to look at. They are ancient and can be found in every ecosystem across the planet.

Fungi are an essential and under studied field of ecology.

Across the Central Tablelands in May are a range of activities celebrating the importance of Fungi in our ecosystems.

Better Bush for Birds!

Are you a landholder who would like to plant some trees on your property?

Over 30 woodland bird species in our region are declining due to habitat loss and fragmentation, including the Brown Treecreeper, Speckled Warbler, and Diamond Firetail.

The Better Bush for Birds project aims to restore and reconnect woodland habitats, using dense plantings of trees and shrubs to improve connectivity between scattered paddock trees and remnant woodland stands, with a particular focus on Box Gum Grassy Woodlands. These efforts will enhance habitat quality and allow vulnerable native woodland species to thrive.

Come along and get involved!

Our next Landcare workday will be on Tuesday 5 May at Lake Pillans. Meet at 9.30am in the Lake Pillans car park on Pillans Lane. We will be doing some mulching and planting maintenance so that recent plantings will grow into lovely shade for walkers and cyclists and habitat for birds, possums and insects.
