Vale Jeff Thurlow

Ahead of Dementia Action Week (16 to 22 September) it is with great sadness that a local community member and well known Dementia Advocate, Jeff Thurlow recently passed away.

Many of you will know Jeff and his partner Sebastian who have been Dementia Advocates for many years. Together they have helped Dementia Australia better represent the views and wishes of people living with dementia, their families and carers.

Jeff’s dedication to making local community more dementia-friendly has had a profound impact on the lives of people living with dementia in Lithgow and the surrounding areas.

This was deservedly recognised in 2021 with Jeff winning the Community Spirit Award at the Lithgow City Council Ability Awards for his role in local dementia advocacy: https://www.dementia.org.au/news/advocate-jeff-thurlow-wins-community-spirit-award

Jeff and Sebastian’s valuable contribution through sharing experiences in media stories, social media, as well as at conferences, events and lectures has helped significantly raised the profile of dementia in the community. Jeff’s celebration of life will take place on Monday 9 September.

Caring for someone living with dementia can be rewarding. It can also be physically and emotionally demanding.

This week is National Carers Week and we’re sharing practical resources to support carers of people living with dementia.

“Being a Good Carer” by Amanda Waring is an invaluable guide for anyone who cares for an older person, whether as a professional or as a loved one.
