LITCHFIELD’S LATEST
Large Hall Erected
OPENING SUCCESSFULLY CELEBRATED.
History was made at Litchfield on Wednesday evening, when the newly-erected Public Hall was officially opened.
From a social viewpoint, Litchfield can now hold its head up in company, and can boast of possessing one of the finest halls in the country areas of the north.
The Building
The hall is an imposing addition to the lately-formed street on the west side of the railway line, the buildings being, in order, Mr A. Cannard’s residence and store, the Litchfield Public Hall, and State School (removed from its old site) and the Roman Catholic Church. The main body of the hall measures 50 feet by 30 feet, the double Oregon storey posts supporting the roof. The roof is of galvanized corrugated iron, and the walls are of pine weatherboard. A fine dancing floor of kauri has been provided, and at one end a stage. Built on to the side of the main building is a fine supper room having entrances to the stage and at the side of the building, in addition to a large side window.
The approximate cost of the hall, with all appointments to date, has been £700. Of this amount £200 was raised in about three months, there being a debt of about £500 on the building previous to Wednesday night’s function, which should return a considerable profit.
