CWA Lismore Day Branch

CWA Lismore Day Branch Lismore CWA is celebrating 100 years of fundraising and friendship. We were the 81st branch to form in 1924, two years after CWA began in NSW.

About the Country Women's Association

The CWA was formed in 1922 when country women were fighting isolation and a lack of health facilities. Within the first year, the Association was a unified, resourceful group that was going from strength to strength. The members worked tirelessly to set up baby health care centres, fund bush nurses, build and staff maternity wards, hospitals, schools, rest ho

mes, seaside and mountain holiday cottages - and much more. The women of the CWA have been initiators, fighters and lobbyists. They have made localities into communities by providing social activities and educational, recreational and medical facilities. Lismore CWA commenced in December 1924. We now share the rooms in Spinks Park with the Lismore CWA Evening Branch which started in 2018. CWA members
Women in NSW and ACT can join a local branch and have a voice in the nation's affairs, socialise with others and assist the community. The CWA is the largest women's organisation in Australia and aims to improve conditions for country women and children. We reach that aim in various ways including lobbying for change, helping the local community, creating a network of support and meeting together in towns and cities. CWA of NSW is a member of CWA of Australia and the international organisation Associated Country Women of the World. Our motto is:
Honour to God
Loyalty to the Throne
Service to the Country
Through Country Women
For Country Women

The beautiful bronze statue of two Aboriginal children in Spinks Park. Lismore CWA commemorates May 26, Sorry Day or the National Day of Healing in our nation’s calendar which recognises the “Bringing Them Home” report to parliament in 1997. This report acknowledged the ongoing harm and injustice suffered by successive governments’ cruel policy of forced assimilation, the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their communities. Kevin Rudd, Australia’s then Prime Minister, issued a National Apology to our Indigenous peoples in 2008 which was one of the Report’s recommendations. Sadly many other recommendations have never been implemented. On Sorry Day, 2017, the Uluru Statement from the Heart was issued to institute a black Voice to Parliament which would correct the lack of social justice still suffered by our First Nations peoples. A referendum was held on ‘The Voice’ and was defeated in 2023.
