DANII Foundation - T1 diabetes Who's looking after today's T1D's? OUR VISION is for a world where people with T1D live without Fear

The DANII Foundation (supporting Type 1 Diabetes) was established in 2012 by parents Donna and Brian Meads-Barlow as a legacy to their 17 year old daughter Daniella following her sudden passing in 2011 as a result of a night time hypoglycaemic episode - a diabetes complication more widely known as “Dead in Bed” syndrome. Danii went to bed a happy, healthy teenager, but sometime during the night, h

er blood glucose levels (BGL’s) fell so low that she became unresponsive and was unable to alert her parents that something was terribly wrong. Danii’s BGL’s fell to such a critically low level that she experienced convulsions, pushing her into a coma, and causing her death – alone and in silence. On learning that there was technology overseas that could have prevented Danii’s death, her parents knew what they had to do: through their own tragedy, they had to do everything possible to prevent another life being cut short. Through her passing, Danii gave her parents a parting gift: the inspiration to create a lasting legacy in her name and the courage to offer today’s T1D’s the care and safety they need to help them manage their diabetes and in doing so, help them live a normal, long and enjoyable life. The DANII Foundation supports the research, development and introduction of alert technology to assist in the management of Type 1 Diabetes.

Diabetes & Mental Health 🧠💙
Living with diabetes means making hundreds of health-related decisions every day , and that can be emotionally exhausting.

People with diabetes are more likely to experience stress, anxiety, and burnout because management never truly stops.
🔹 Constant monitoring can feel overwhelming
🔹 Fear of highs and lows creates ongoing worry
🔹 Feeling “different” can affect self-esteem
🔹 Burnout may lead to loss of motivation in self-care
This emotional burden is often called diabetes distress and it is real, valid, and common.
✨ Taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your blood sugar.

Talking to loved ones, joining support groups, or seeking professional help can make a powerful difference.
At DANII Foundation, we believe no one should face diabetes alone. 💙

Quality sleep is not a luxury, it’s an essential part of managing diabetes.

When you don’t get enough rest, blood sugar levels can become harder to control, affecting both your physical and emotional wellbeing.

🔹 Why sleep matters:

-Poor sleep reduces insulin sensitivity
-Lack of rest increases stress hormones that raise glucose
-Sleep deprivation can increase cravings for sugary foods
-Fatigue makes daily diabetes management more challenging

🔹 Common challenges:
-Night-time highs or lows
-Frequent waking to check glucose
-Thirst or hunger at night
-Anxiety about night-time hypos

🔹 Tips for better sleep:
-Keep a regular sleep schedule
-Check blood sugar before bed
-Create a calm bedtime routine
-Keep your bedroom dark, quiet, and cool
-Limit caffeine and heavy meals in the evening

✨ Getting enough quality sleep supports stable blood sugar, better energy, and healthier daily choices.

At DANII Foundation, we encourage looking after both your body and mind , day and night 💙

Did you know that staying hydrated is a key part of managing diabetes? 💙

When your body doesn’t get enough water, blood sugar levels can become harder to control. Even mild dehydration can affect your energy, focus, and mood , which makes daily diabetes management more challenging.

🔹 Why it matters:

-Dehydration can cause your blood glucose to rise
-High blood sugar makes your body lose more fluids through urination
-This can create a cycle that worsens glucose control

🔹 Practical tips:

-Drink water regularly throughout the day, not just when you feel thirsty
-Carry a water bottle with you at work, school, or while exercising
-Include hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables in your meals
-Monitor your glucose more closely during hot weather or illness

✨ Staying hydrated supports healthy blood sugar levels, kidney function, and overall wellbeing.

At DANII Foundation, we encourage simple daily habits that make a big difference in managing diabetes. 💙

They come with decisions, calculations, and the constant worry of unpredictable blood sugars: before, during, or after eating.
