The bonus monthly DTL shoot at Orange Clay Target Club attracted a healthy turnout of 47 contestants and was shot in the near-perfect late winter weather that makes OCTC famous.
The day featured two events, the first being the third and final leg of the Jeff Nash Memorial Shield - the first and second legs having been previously contested at Canowindra Clay Target Club and Parkes Gun Club. As in 2025, PGC streaked out to a massive lead due to home-ground advantage and it was to be seen if the plucky OCTC locals could reel them in.
The first event of the day was a 50-target double barrel cash divide. In AA Grade, 3 possibles (50/50) were shot and the prizemoney split between Darryl Weal, John Gray and Douglas Ferguson (Warren). S***t prodigy Jordon Little and Jodie Dunn shared the A Grade prizemoney, both posting 50/50, while in B Grade Geoff Breaden (Parkes) took first place (49/50) from the trio of Alan Miles (Parkes), Rod Haug (Cowra) and Phil Sharp (all on 48/50). C Grade was split three ways between Josh Soley (Parkes), Amanda Delaney and Tony McPaul.
The second event, a 50-target medley (25 target single barrel, 25 target point score), was shared in AA Grade between Barry Heaslip (Canowindra) and Clinton Hawke (Parkes) with 97/100. A Grade was won by Ben Delaney with the highest score of the day (98/100), from Jordon Little. B Grade went to John Tomlinson (Parkes) who seems to be continuing his revival tour, from Rod Haug and Sam McRae. Amanda Delaney continued her renaissance by winning C Grade from the father/son duo of Leo and Pat Micari.
High Gun for the day was a five-way split between junior Ben Delaney, Clinton Hawke, Barry Heaslip, Jordon Little and John Gray, all 4 down for the day.
After the dust settled on the first event, Orange Clay Target Club managed to run down Parkes to claim the Jeff Nash Memorial Shield by 6 points, with Canowindra in third. OCTC would like to thank all the club members who turned out and a big thank you to Parkes Gun Club who brought over half their club to contest the shield.

Practice will be on again this Friday (28 August) at Orange Clay Target Club commencing at around 2.30 pm.
Two points to note - firstly, it's the last winter practice and secondly (and more importantly), it's the last chance to practice before the Jeff Nash Memorial Shield shoot on Sunday.
You may have squibbed it all winter on the practice lanes, so here's your chance to get out and say that, yes, I do practice throughout the year. Likewise, you can say that, yes, I did practice and supported my club against the barbarian hordes from Parkes and Canowindra on Sunday.
Get out of your chair, get on your bike and head on out to OCTC, you know you want to.

Another bright and sunny day (with the odd cloud scurrying by borne on some random fluky zephyrs) greeted the participants at the Orange Clay Target Club's monthly August DTL shoot. A good contingent of OCTC members, with travelers from Bathurst, Canowindra, Narromine and Warren, as well as two Narromine Sporting Clays members who popped over to teach us how to shoot, were on hand to enjoy the first (and probably temporary) taste of spring.
The first event, a 25-target Point Score cash divide, was won by Mark Dutton (Narromine) from Ned Shelton in AA Grade, with Glenn McAllister taking A Grade (posting the only possible shot) from Adam Brown and Andrew McPaul. B Grade was won by Sam McRae from Jay Elmes (back on the comeback trail), and C Grade went to Amanda Delaney from Pat Micari, both of whom seem to be back in town shooting-wise.
The 25-target Single Barrel cash divide was won by regular visitor Douglas Ferguson (Warren) from Mark Dutton in AA Grade. A Grade went to Glenn McAllister (again posting the only possible) from uncle and nephew duo of Andrew McPaul and Ben Delaney. Sam McRae again bested the B Grade field, this time from Laurie Arnold (Bathurst) and Terry Steele and C Grade was split between Amanda Delaney and Leo Micari.
The 15-pair Double Rise event was won by Chris Delaney from Adam Brown in AA Grade and Darryl Weal from Douglas Ferguson in A Grade. Ned Shelton won B Grade (with the highest score of the day), with Andrew McPaul and Willem Myburgh Jr splitting the second-place spoils. C Grade was halved between Laurie Arnold and Ben Delaney, both posting not-to-be-sneezed-at 25/30s.
The big event of the day, the 20-pair Deauville Doubles championship came down to a shoot-off between 4 pairs (Willem Myburgh Sr and Jr, Joe Caltabiano/Darryl Weal, Rod Carr/Denis Coaker and Adam Brown/Ned Shelton) who all shot the possible 20/20. After the dust settled, the well-established and well-oiled machine of Adam and Ned took out another championship win (34/34) from Rod and Denis, who showed that sporting clay shooters can well put the frighteners into DTL shooters on their home turf.
High gun for the day went to Glenn McAllister (125/130), set up by 100/100 after the first two events.

Here's your reminder that practice is on again tomorrow, Friday 21 August. With the regular set-up squad back in town after gallivanting around the countryside last week, practice will be starting at the regular time of 3.00 pm or even earlier (maybe we should just say 2.30 pm and be done with it). Don't worry about the weather, you'll get a round or two in before, during or after the predicted precipitation.

We might have told you that it's a big fortnight coming up last week, but now it's an even biggerer 3 weeks coming up! You'll need to hit the practice lanes this week (Friday 14 August), to be able to cope and hold your heads high.
Why? Simples. As indicated last week, the Cobar Clay Target Club's Golden Clay is on this weekend (you'll have to get on your bike if you're going to shoot practice and get to Cobar in time), followed by the Orange Clay Target Club monthly shoot (23 August) and the OCTC 5th Sunday economy shoot (30 August) that includes the final leg of the Jeff Nash Memorial Shield contested between OCTC, Parkes Gun Club and Canowindra Clay Target Club. With OCTC not far off the lead and with home ground advantage, we are in with a very strong chance. However, we cannot take this for granted, so practice we will (and you definitely read that as Yoda).
Practice starts at 3.00 pm or earlier, and if you are of a helping nature, you'll get there early to help set up as two thirds of the regular gang are unavailable due to Cobar and NSWCTA State Compak commitments.

It’s a big fortnight coming up shooters - Parkes’ Golden Dish shoot this weekend followed by Cobar’s Golden Clay shoot the following weekend. So, you know what that means - practice, practice, practice. What better place to practice than Orange Clay Target Club, and what better time to start than tomorrow, Friday 7 August.
If you’re not leaving early to snag the el primo camping spot at Parkes (just make sure that you’re well away from the notorious Parkes bad-influences) why not turn up at 3.00 pm (2.30 pm-ish for the early birds) to sharpen those skills to keep you at the pointy end of the competition.

Okay, we've all calmed down from last weekend, so it's time to get back to 'meat and 3 veg' shooting, starting with practice tomorrow (31 July) at Orange Clay Target Club, followed by our monthly s***t competition on Sunday (2 August).
Practice starts at 3.00 pm, but is gymnastically flexible (probably anywhere from 2.30 pm 'til dark if the truth be known). Sunday S***t is a bit less flexible (it's serious stuff after all) and starts anywhere from 11.00 am to 11.00 am (yes, that's right, get there on time).
Here are a couple of vids from Saturday to let you know what we got up to and what you missed out on - oh, one's sideways, just turn your device or rotate it 270 degrees, your choice (and no, we didn't shoot side-on even though it's a novelty event).

Okay, that's Serious Sunday dealt with, now onto Saturday - the Christmas in July Novelty Shoot and Dinner.
As in 2025, we had three novelty events which once again tested the abilities, patience and co-ordination especially of those who thought that they could shoot and which separated the target shooters from the old duck hunters.
The first event, a 26-target 'hare hunt', saw 13 pairs of targets thrown from the DTL trap, but shot from the s***t pads. To make it more interesting, the pairs were of the oscillating, continental persuasion, which may have occasionally penalised the more vertically challenged competitors (although it must be said that it was the least vertically challenged shooter who popped one into the lid of the traphouse!). Winner of the event (and too young to even know what a duck is, let alone bag one), was Willem Myburgh Jr (18/26), from a bunch of also-rans led by Greg Jones, Chris Delaney, Lucas Young and Wayne Sharp.
The second event, quaintly titled 'Why Stand When You Can Sit', replaced last year's wildly frustrating 'gun down, walk up' event. Shooting from a range of seating apparatuses (from a milk crate to a 'stick that in your chair hole' chair), competitors shot at 25 double-barrel targets. Three shooters shot the possible (25/25) - Chris Delaney, John Gray and Willem Myburgh Jr. As is the case for an OCTC novelty event, the winner was drawn from a hat, with Ben Delaney doing the right thing by drawing his father (no, all the names in the hat were not 'Chris').
The third event, 25 single-barrel 'Timed Targets', sorted a lot of wheat from the goats. Two AA Graders and 1 A Grader (no names/no pack drill, but 2 of which would definitely be classified as old duck hunters) had their colours lowered or were matched by a 12 year-old junior in her first shoot facing oscillating targets. Well done Madi Delaney! Oh, winner of the event was Andrew McPaul (20/25), from Lucas Young and Greg Jones.
As was the case last year, if you win an event you don't necessarily get to keep your winnings - you need to battle your evil Secret Santa partner to keep them. Luckily for the winners, they all managed to keep their prize, while the trio of Secret Santas (Leo Micari, Wayne Sharp and Grahame Haley) each took home the consolation prize of a house brick.
Flash targets (donated by Gunsmoke Bathurst) shot on the day scored each lucky competitor a bottle of wine (donated by Ned's Creek) - well done to Wayne Sharp, Chris Delaney, Michelle Leabeater and Willem Myburgh.

Orange Clay Target Club would like to express its deepest gratitude to Ned and Sharon Shelton (as well as a bevy of elvish helpers), who once again organised a fantastic day and night. Also, the club would like to thank Lucas Young (a great supporter of OCTC) for digging very deeply to win an auction of a mystery box of goodies (and no, we didn't let him win on Sunday to offset it).
