Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Day takes place every year on 27 June. Established by the United Nations, it recognises the role that small businesses play in creating jobs, driving innovation, and supporting communities around the world.
At Microlend Australia, we understand the significant impact of encouraging and developing micro businesses as a way of alleviating crippling poverty.
It is often the corner shopkeepers, market traders, family workshops, freelance designers, and growing start-ups whose combined effort underpin local economies and communities - and unless they are given a chance, they often fail to get going.
This day raises awareness of the contributions these enterprises make towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and it calls on governments, banks, corporations and benevolent individuals to give small firms access to the finance, training, and market support they need to thrive.

We hope you will be encouraged as we share the story of Alleah*, a 39 year old mother of 4 children, who helps support her family by selling tomatoes, chili, and cabbage at a small local market. She was earning approximately 600 Ethiopian Birr per day (approximately AUD $5), however she did not have a robust savings strategy in place.
Alleah joined the Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) group run by New Hope Ethiopia, consisting of 24 members who meet regularly to save money together and support one another financially.
Alleah received training through the program and developed a habit of saving money weekly. So far, she has amassed 12,000 Ethiopian Birr (approximately AUD $106) and is encouraging other women in her community to practice saving.

At Microlend Australia, we recognise the value and importantance of this UN initiative which highlights how economic and social gaps affect children, advocating for strong programs and actions to reduce inequality and boost child development.

Ryszard Kaminski works with DevelopmentAid - an international collaboration of partners working to solve critical world issues. He is a highly experienced team leader and project manager with expertise in donor-funded project preparation, management, and evaluation.

He recently wrote ..........................."Addressing poverty requires a diversified approach that combines economic growth, education, social protection, financial inclusion, and community participation. While no single strategy can eradicate poverty, the synergy of these collective efforts can create an environment that is conducive to sustainable development.
