We hope you will be encouraged as we share the story of Alleah*, a 39 year old mother of 4 children, who helps support her family by selling tomatoes, chili, and cabbage at a small local market. She was earning approximately 600 Ethiopian Birr per day (approximately AUD $5), however she did not have a robust savings strategy in place.
Alleah joined the Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) group run by New Hope Ethiopia, consisting of 24 members who meet regularly to save money together and support one another financially.
Alleah received training through the program and developed a habit of saving money weekly. So far, she has amassed 12,000 Ethiopian Birr (approximately AUD $106) and is encouraging other women in her community to practice saving.

Today we pause to recognise the INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FAMILIES - a significant moment promoting family-oriented policies to support child well-being and reduce poverty.
At Microlend Australia, we recognise the value and importantance of this UN initiative which highlights how economic and social gaps affect children, advocating for strong programs and actions to reduce inequality and boost child development.

Ryszard Kaminski works with DevelopmentAid - an international collaboration of partners working to solve critical world issues. He is a highly experienced team leader and project manager with expertise in donor-funded project preparation, management, and evaluation.

He recently wrote ..........................."Addressing poverty requires a diversified approach that combines economic growth, education, social protection, financial inclusion, and community participation. While no single strategy can eradicate poverty, the synergy of these collective efforts can create an environment that is conducive to sustainable development.

“Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice,” Nelson Mandela.

Through concerted and sustained efforts, the global community can make significant strides towards a future that is free from poverty."...........................

It is encouraging to realise that the foundational principles underlying our work at Microlend Australia are endorsed as key strategies for addressing the issue of world poverty.👍🙏

Together for health. Stand with science.

Today is World Health Day 2026 and the World Health Organisation is mobilising the world under the theme “Together for health. Stand with science.”

At Microlend, we know that good health SHOULD BE a basic, fundamental human right - but often poverty acts as a barrier to people accessing the resources and information they need.

If we can break the "poverty cycle", then we unlock access to a wide range of benefits that help empower life. Let us show you how this process can begin with some very simple steps.

World Day of Social Justice 2026: Promoting Equality, Inclusion, and Human Rights

Observed annually on February 20, the World Day of Social Justice highlights the importance of addressing global challenges such as poverty, exclusion, unemployment, gender inequality, and human rights.

Social justice remains critical as global inequality, labor insecurity, and exclusion persist. Addressing these challenges requires efforts to improve inclusive governance, equitable labor markets, and universal access to social protections.

If you would like to know more about how you can make a meaningful contribution in these efforts, contact Ralf on [email protected]

As we head into 2026, we find ourselves in a world overwhelmed by the violence that is spreading – from lawless wars to climate catastrophes, from homelessness to famine. Our world seems to be plagued by instability and inhumanity. We risk becoming desensitised by all the negative circumstances, BUT - acts of courage, resistance, and reconciliation – though they may be small – do exist. There are stories of lives that are often unseen, yet never without hope. These stories may not make the “headlines”, but as “heartlines” they resonate as an act of remembrance and presence.

People are working tirelessly to overcome poverty everywhere around the world, taking risks to free themselves from the power exerted by others and to seek freedom and peace in impossible circumstances. In the midst of the suffering, these acts of courage should inspire all of humanity to rethink itself, to rethink all of its ideals in relation to those who, by right, should be part of the community and who, in fact, are excluded from it.

So as we begin this new year, allow us at Microlend Australia to challenge you.
* to connect, and re-connect with one another,
* to demonstrate your commitment to overcoming extreme poverty,
* to be strong and resilient in making the most silenced voices heard, and to carry them everywhere together.
