On behalf of all members of Marine Rescue Lemon Tree Passage, we extend our deepest condolences to the members, families and friends of Marine Rescue Ballina following the tragic loss of William and Frank whilst undertaking a rescue on Monday.

The loss of fellow volunteers in the line of duty is felt deeply across the entire Marine Rescue family. William and Frank made the ultimate sacrifice whilst selflessly assisting others in difficult conditions, reflecting the courage, commitment and dedication shown every day by Marine Rescue volunteers across the state.

Our thoughts are also with all those impacted by this tragedy, including the crews, support teams and the wider Ballina community during this incredibly difficult time.

Please know that the members of Marine Rescue Lemon Tree Passage stand beside you in support and solidarity.

Saving lives on the water often comes at great personal risk, and their service and sacrifice will not be forgotten.

A message from the NSW Minister for Emergency Services, Jihad Dib MP.

My thoughts are also with our local Marine Rescue Port Stephens and Marine Rescue Lemon Tree Passage volunteers and families - this is difficult news for all of the Marine Rescue NSW family πŸ’™

Last night was the darkest night ever experienced by Marine Rescue NSW.

Marine Rescue NSW volunteers answer the call for help 24/7 and last night six members from Marine Rescue Ballina did just that. They launched with a single mission, to save lives on the water and assist a yacht, reported to be in difficulty off the South Ballina break wall.

Tragically, two of our volunteers lost their lives during the response.

Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Todd Andrews said the devastating loss is a solemn reminder of the risks faced by volunteers who serve their communities.

β€œThese two men were serving their local community and have made the ultimate sacrifice to help others.

β€œOur thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of the deceased, their fellow crew members, the brave radio operators who handled the difficult communications during the incident, the entire Marine Rescue NSW family and the wider Ballina community during this incredibly difficult time.

β€œWe are supporting our volunteers and their families through professional counselling and chaplaincy support.

β€œWe ask that the privacy of those involved and their families be respected during this difficult time,” Commissioner Andrews said.

🚨 Marine Rescue Lemon Tree Passage responded to a distress call on Saturday evening to assist a broken-down vessel reported to be just 600 metres from a fish and chip shop.

πŸ“‘ Radio Operator Cliff worked to clarify the location, which was identified as near Fly Point, Port Stephens. Rescue vessel Lemon Tree 30 was tasked, with Skipper Steve and crew Rick, Brian and Josie responding promptly.

πŸŒ™ After conducting a search in the darkness, the vessel was located and a safe tow was established back to Little Beach, where appreciative family and friends were waiting.

πŸ‘ A great team effort and a positive outcome for all involved.

🚨 Marine Rescue Lemon Tree Passage responded to a call for assistance at the northern end of Myall Lake on Tuesday afternoon.

🚚 Due to the distance involved, it was decided to deploy rescue vessel Marine Rescue 23 by road to Seal Rocks. The crew arrived at sunset and quickly launched, making their way to the vessel in distress before commencing a safe tow.

πŸŒ™ With darkness falling across the lake, the operation was carried out in total darkness. The use of onboard electronic navigation tools proved essential in safely guiding both vessels through the shallow and challenging waters.

πŸ‘ A great effort by the crew and radio operator to complete a safe and successful rescue under demanding conditions.

⚠️ This is a timely reminder:
πŸ’‘ Ensure all your navigation lights are working properly
πŸ“‘ Carry a reliable marine VHF radio β€” mobile phone coverage is limited on the lakes

πŸ•’ Remember, Marine Rescue Lemon Tree Passage is available 24 hours a day to assist boaters anywhere in the Port Stephens – Great Lakes Marine Park.
