Jason Gowans and Ben Walsh from Suncentral Solar came to Rotary last week to give us an update on the features and benefits of becoming independent of the whims of electricity providers who supply our electricity.
Their presentation was backed up with many useful facts and provided the way to get the information required for those who are contemplating a solar system and / or a battery
Thanks fellas

If you saw a group of "workers" on Wamoon Ave, you may think that the staff at the Council have aged somewhat. Well, no, they were Rotarians with some extra helpers installing a new seat as a rest spot on the pedestrian way from Wattle Hill to the CBD.
Thanks to Area Premix Concrete for their generous donation of the concrete for the slab and to Rotary International for their Rotary District 9705 district grant.
Many hands make "light" work!

Grain of Hope is Rob Houghton's and Ken Dachi’s project that was featured at our 30 April dinner meeting on a YouTube video from the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley that explained the ambitious plan and the problems associated with acquiring grain, shipping the grain, and distributing the grain to those in need in Sudan.
Rob talked about food security in the world and how, we in Riverina, should help. He outlined the issues that cause mass starvation: war, famine, government failure, and America’s withdrawal from food programs.
While Rob talked, Ken displayed HungerMAP, a map indicating various degrees of mass starvation in countries of the world. (Google HungerMAP and fiddle for your own version)
The search for a trusted person to oversee every transfer of bulk grain to the destination has led to many new contacts. Many people and organisations have gladly helped because of the need for such a system.
Rob and Ken are developing contacts on a smaller scale than intended firstly. However, the long-term plan is to build a sustainable system on a larger scale using the contacts, organisation and government links set up by Ken and Rob.
Ken talked about ‘SANKU- end malnutrition in Africa’ (google for yourself). This site emphasises the extent of malnutrition in Africa and a special tool used to deliver important nutrients to food products that can be made available to children in areas of need.
Sudan was chosen for this project because it is the oldest hunger crisis and has recently been under-reported.
Following Rob and Ken’s presentation, Graeme spoke of the pride his Leeton community has gained from the Grain of Hope project, how from small things, big things grow. Greg followed with praise for the approach of one step at a time, learning as you go, and gaining support as you go.

A wonderful recent visitor to our community was Rachel Cody, Supervisor at the Leeton Shire Council Library. Rachel successfully secured an Australia-wide grant through Australia Reads — a not-for-profit initiative of the Australian books industry that encourages more people to read, more often. The Leeton Library was one of just 27 libraries across Australia to receive funding.
With the grant, Rachel invited Meredith Costain, a children’s author from Gippsland, to speak with local primary school students. Despite travel challenges caused by cancelled Melbourne–Wagga flights, Meredith still made the trip via Sydney — and it was absolutely worth it. She visited students from schools across the area, including smaller schools, and was a delight, inspiring many children to enjoy reading.
Even better, Meredith did not charge the full amount for her visit, which means there are still grant funds available. Rachel is now hoping to build on that support by reaching out to service clubs, with the goal of purchasing a book for every primary school student in the area. With 1,151 children to reach, it’s a big but meaningful goal — helping every child have the chance to own a book of their own.
Rachel also shared some great library initiatives already underway, including placing books at the Yanco Store and continuing the home library delivery service run by volunteers.
The library is also running a community survey to help improve services. If you’d like to have your say, the form is available at the library and online through the library’s survey page.
What a fantastic example of community effort supporting literacy and learning across our region. A big thank you to Rachel, Meredith, the schools, volunteers, and everyone helping make reading more accessible for local children.

Vale to our Honorary Member Peter Errey who will go to meet with his beloved Estella today. We have missed Peter over the recent years that he has been in Echuca, though we know he has been keeping up with the activities of Rotary. Peter joined Rotary 36 years ago and was introduced by Bruce Rodely. A past secretary of the club his mantra and advice to other secretaries was that the secretary's job was "to make the President look good" and therefore not to take the limelight. Peter's friendly smile and sage advice are to be missed. Again, as for other members of our Club - a life well lived and the world is a better place for you being here Peter. RIP
