UTAS Community Music Programme

UTAS Community Music Programme The Community Music Programme Launceston aims to develop players' musical skills and confidence in a fun and social learning environment.

You can start in a band appropriate to your level. The University of Tasmania Community Music Program (UTCMP) was founded in 1985. The original ensemble, the University Concert Band, began its first rehearsal with 50 musicians. Today a team of 4 accomplished conductors headed by Musical Director Luke Beasley cater for over 150 university and community musicians. There are 4 graded ensembles which

bring woodwind, brass and percussion instrumentalists together catering for a wide range of ages and abilities, from very experienced players to those who have never played a musical instrument before. Since its inception the UTCMP has provided the inspiration and impetus for the growth of concert bands both in schools as well as in communities throughout Tasmania. UTCMP aims to develop player’s musical skill and confidence in a fun and social learning environment. You can start in a band appropriate to your level and be guided through the band development program. Share rewarding and exciting performance experiences with community members of all ages and backgrounds and play great music. We welcome new members and our annual intake is in February every year but you can join at any time.

Whether you’re picking up an instrument for the first time or returning after a break, you’ll be supported in a positive and inclusive environment.

Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Orchestra commence rehearsals in early February.

The 2026 Beginning Band will start at the beginning of March.
New participants are warmly encouraged to get involved.
