The Launceston Players Society, formed in September 1926, is one of the oldest theatre companies in Australia; since then it has had an unbroken record of operation in the local and Northern Tasmania community. It was started by people with a passion for fine performance, and bringing the best of contemporary works to the theatre going public, a tradition which continues to this day. COMMITTEE 202

This special building is where the Launceston players staged the very first production of “Nothing But the Truth” The Academy of Music was later developed into the luxurious Plaza cinema in 1932 where it operated until it’s demolition in 1964. Meet our Director, Jesse Apted

Every case requires a mind willing to take on the impossible. A man who looks at limited resources and sees not a problem, but a puzzle to be solved.
Jesse Apted is our director and if you tell him it's an ambitious undertaking for a first full-length production, he will tell you that is rather the point. Armed with little more than a challenge, a few months of searching, and one fateful visit to a bookshop, he found exactly the right script: a story driven not by lavish sets or elaborate lighting, but by the imagination of the actors and the audience alike.
The result, I am told, is wonderfully, gloriously silly and all the better for it.
Watson and I look forward to seeing what he has made of us.

Dear Follower,

Watson has asked me, the Sherlock Holmes, to say a few words about the man who will be portraying me. I find the entire concept faintly absurd. And yet, I must concede the fellow is qualified.

Matt Harris is a Tasmanian Theatre Award winner twice over, a composer, a sound designer, and a man who recently wrote and staged an entire musical. His credentials are, I will grudgingly admit, not inconsiderable.
Whether he can do me justice is a question only the stage can answer.

Meet the Cast!

I, Sherlock Holmes, have encountered many remarkable individuals in my years of investigation, but few who have mastered quite so many disciplines.
Ashley Eyles joins us for The Hound of the Baskervilles; performer, technician, stage combatant, director, and stage manager. She holds formal certifications in both British and Australian fight direction, and has earned no fewer than two award nominations at the Tasmanian Theatre Awards. In short, she is precisely the sort of person one wants on their side when the game turns dangerous.
The moors, I suspect, hold little fear for her.

Where the show really excels is in the fundamentals comedic theatre, displayed best when the absurdity of a scene was taken completely seriously by the actors/characters. Comedies often fall victim to including "rehearsal room laughs". It's a credit to Apted and his team of actors for being disciplined enough to stick to these fundamentals, ultimately resulting in an array of memorable gags, ridiculous visuals and hilarious physical comedy.

Dear followers, allow I, Sherlock Holmes, to introduce the man who requires no introduction and yet, characteristically, we shall provide one anyway.

Ryan Politis, a man of considerable theatrical pedigree, with over 15 years on the Launceston stage. A graduate of the University of Tasmania, a Tasmanian Theatre Award winner, a playwright, and a director. In short, a man of many talents. Whether he can keep up with me on the moors remains to be seen.
