Leadership talent exists in every community.

Opportunity does not.

Last year, Tasmanian Leaders provided eight scholarships worth more than $31,000, helping more Tasmanians access leadership development opportunities.

As a registered charity, we rely on the support of our community to continue creating pathways for people to participate, connect and grow.

This EOFY, we're inviting you to help someone step forward.

When faced with uncertainty, our instinct is often to simplify.

Reduce the variables.
Find the answer.
Create a plan.

But as Dr Aiden M. A. Thornton explores in a recent podcast conversation, complexity asks something different of us.

Not every challenge can be reduced to a simple problem and solution.

Sometimes the work is learning how to navigate interconnected issues, competing priorities and uncertainty without rushing to premature answers.

It's one of the ideas that sits at the heart of Leading through Complexity.

Sometimes leadership work also looks like dancing in the yard in a very good hoodie.

Big thanks to AIME for the care package — enthusiastically received by our CEO Angela Driver GTLP.

This National Reconciliation Week, we’re reflecting on the importance of relationships, learning, connection and showing up in community over time.

Also yes, the hoodie absolutely required an immediate dance response.

This week is National Reconciliation Week.

Reconciliation is ongoing work shaped by relationships, listening, learning and the willingness to stay engaged over time.

In Tasmania especially, these conversations can carry deep history, complexity and strong emotion. We don’t pretend to have simple answers, but we do believe leadership matters in how people show up, listen and create space for respectful dialogue and participation.

There is a proverb that says:
“The fool asks, ‘Are we there yet?’
The wise person asks, ‘Do we have enough strength left for the journey?’”

This quote was shared with TLP20 by Martin Flanagan, and it stayed with us across two big days exploring Community Leadership.

From truth-telling, leadership and hope with Aunty Patsy Cameron AO and Martin, to conversations about adaptive capacity, privilege, power, allyship, advocacy and lived experience, the session asked us to look more closely at the communities we are part of — and the responsibilities we carry within them.

When we look honestly at our communities, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed by how far there is still to go. On some issues, progress feels slow. On others, it can feel as though we are sliding backwards.

But community leadership asks something deeper of us.

Not just whether we have arrived, but how we keep going. How we sustain courage, connection and hope. How we keep showing up when the work is hard, complex and unfinished.

Thank you to everyone who shared their stories and wisdom, including Aunty Patsy Cameron AO, Martin Flanagan, David Adams, Robin Banks, Mary Knowles, Chris Lenga, Aleana Robbins, Jane Wardlaw, Kirsten Ritchie and Strike It Out Inc Tasmania, Julia Curtis, our TLP community project speakers, Miriam Silva AM and Rodney Croome AM.

A powerful few days of listening and learning that lasting change requires both urgency and endurance.

Communities are built by people willing to step forward, contribute and connect with others.

Across the Tasmanian Leaders network, graduates continue to volunteer their time, share expertise, support events, mentor others and contribute to projects and communities across Tasmania in all kinds of ways.

Our Graduate Search helps connect organisations, projects and communities with experienced leaders and contributors across the state.
