Young people do not always communicate distress directly.

For many, saying they are fine can be a way of managing risk, particularly if they have experienced unsafe or inconsistent responses when opening up in the past.

Some young people have learned that sharing their experiences does not always lead to support.

Others may not yet feel safe enough to talk.

This is why consistent, patient engagement is critical.

Checking in without pressure, maintaining availability, and responding calmly over time helps rebuild a sense of safety and trust.

Trust is not built through one interaction.

It is built through consistency.

We are proud to announce that our organisation has successfully achieved accreditation with the Australian Childhood Foundation (ACF).

What makes this achievement particularly meaningful is that accreditation was granted on our first application, with ACF awarding us the maximum three-year accreditation period.

This recognition reflects our unwavering commitment to embedding child-safe practices throughout our organisation and fostering environments where children and young people feel safe, respected, and supported.

Achieving accreditation requires organisations to demonstrate robust child-safe systems, strong governance, and a culture that prioritises the wellbeing and protection of children. Receiving a three-year accreditation on our first assessment is a testament to the dedication, professionalism, and passion of our entire team, as well as the leadership and oversight provided by our Board, whose commitment to strong governance and child safety has helped shape and strengthen our organisation.

We extend our sincere thanks to our Board, staff, families, partners, and community for their ongoing support and shared commitment to creating safe and empowering spaces for children and young people.

This milestone is not the finish line, it is a reflection of the standards we hold ourselves to every day and our ongoing commitment to continuous improvement in child safety and wellbeing.

Our kids are not the problem. They are survivors.

Many young people are carrying experiences, challenges, and pressures that no young person should have to face alone. What can sometimes be labelled as “challenging behaviour” is often a response to stress, instability, trauma, grief, or feeling unsafe.

Behind every behaviour is a young person trying to cope, adapt, protect themselves, or make sense of what they have experienced.

That’s why supportive environments matter.

Young people need:
– safety and stability
– trusted relationships
– patience and consistency
– opportunities to feel heard without judgement

When we change the question from “What’s wrong with them?” to “What have they experienced?” we create space for greater understanding, compassion, and more effective support.

Every young person deserves the opportunity to feel safe, valued, supported, and hopeful about their future.

Spend time doing things that make you forget to check your phone.

Not because phones are “bad”, but because moments of genuine connection, creativity, rest, and enjoyment are important for wellbeing too.

That might look like:
– spending time outdoors
– listening to music
– creating something
– playing sport
– talking with friends
– reading, drawing, cooking, or simply slowing down

Taking small breaks from constant notifications and scrolling can help create space to recharge, reset, and reconnect with the present moment.

You don’t have to disconnect completely. Sometimes it’s just about finding balance and making time for the things that help you feel grounded.

Relationship and family breakdowns are one of the leading causes of youth homelessness.

When relationships at home become unsafe, unstable, or difficult to navigate, many young people can find themselves without consistent support or secure accommodation. In some situations, young people may leave home suddenly, while others may experience ongoing conflict that impacts their sense of safety and wellbeing over time.

For young people, losing connection to stable support can affect much more than housing. It can impact:
– mental wellbeing
– education and employment
– relationships and trust
– overall sense of stability and belonging

Youth homelessness is often the result of complex circumstances, not personal failure.

Creating supportive environments, improving access to early support, and strengthening community understanding can all play a role in helping young people feel safer and more connected.

Youth homelessness is real, and it’s affecting young people in communities across Australia every day.

Homelessness doesn’t always look the way people expect. For young people, it can include couch surfing, staying in unsafe environments, living in temporary accommodation, or not knowing where they’ll sleep next.

Behind every statistic is a young person trying to navigate uncertainty, stress, and instability while still managing everyday life, education, relationships, and wellbeing.

Safe accommodation and consistent support can make a significant difference. Having a stable environment can help young people feel safer, more connected, and better supported to focus on their future.

Raising awareness matters because understanding the reality of youth homelessness is an important step toward building more supportive and informed communities.

Today we want to acknowledge and thank Rob Fairs MP for his ongoing support, advocacy, and genuine commitment to Karinya and the young people we support.

Over many years, Rob has stood alongside Karinya with compassion, authenticity, and a deep belief that every young person deserves opportunity, support, and hope for their future. Through both positive moments and difficult challenges, Rob has continued to advocate strongly for vulnerable young people and the not-for-profit sector.

In his inaugural speech, Rob shared words that strongly reflect the values we hold at Karinya:

“In my view, all kids deserve a fair go and the chance to become the best versions of themselves.”

These are values deeply shared by Karinya, our staff, and our Board. We are grateful for Rob’s continued friendship and his dedication to supporting disadvantaged young people and strengthening our community.

Over the past year, Karinya Youth Services provided more than 18,400 bed nights of accommodation to young people in need of safe and stable support.

Behind every bed night is more than just a place to sleep. It represents safety, consistency, connection, and the opportunity for young people to access support in a stable environment.

For many young people, having access to secure accommodation can make a significant difference in their wellbeing, sense of stability, and ability to focus on their future.

We’re proud to continue creating spaces that prioritise safety, respect, and support for young people across our community.
