We’re pleased to announce a new project to help safeguard one of Tasmania’s rarest plants, the endangered Shy Susan (Tetratheca gunnii).

Found only in the Dazzler Range near Beaconsfield, this small purple-flowering herb faces threats from invasive species, disease and human disturbance. Supported by the Tasmanian Government and delivered by NRM North with our project partners, Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service, EPA Tasmania, West Tamar Landcare Inc. and Threatened Plants Tasmania, the project will focus on practical on-ground actions including w**d control, vehicle access management, annual monitoring, and expanding the insurance population to support future translocation efforts.

This work builds on our previous conservation efforts and brings together partners, volunteers and specialists to help secure the future of this critically endangered species.

We were privileged to share some time in February with US-based journalist, Stefan Lovgren, while he visited Tasmania.

Stefan took great interest in the value of healthy waterways in Tasmania, and the support they offer to threatened species in a changing climate.

Stefan's article on Tasmania as a climate refuge was recently published by global nonprofit and environmental news outlet, Mongabay. On this , the UN Environment Program calls on us all to step in and act on the signals the Earth is sending us.

This morning, the NRM North team attended Reconciliation Tasmania's Launceston breakfast, held during National Reconciliation Week.

Reflecting Tasmania's theme of Truth. Reckoning. Change., we heard powerful messages from speakers including Bianca Templar, who spoke about the feeling of standing on the shoulders of elders to take advantage of the opportunities given to her, and singer-songwriter DENNI, who reminded us that being an Aboriginal ally is not a clock-on, clock-off commitment.

Reconciliation Tasmania CEO Pauline Cook challenged us to consider how traditional reconciliation actions can sometimes become a substitute for meaningful change, and encouraged a continued focus on action and accountability. Enforcing that message, landholder Tom Teniswood spoke of he and his partner Jane’s experience of gifting 110 hectares of their east coast property to the Aboriginal Land Council of Tasmania in 2019, the first private land return in Tasmania, and the meaningful reconciliation between all parties involved.

We're grateful to have been part of the conversation. Funds raised through the breakfast will support grants to help create culturally safe places for students in Tasmanian schools.

👏 Across northern Tasmania, there are groups of people quietly doing some of the most important conservation work in the region. Lilydale Landcare, West Tamar Landcare Inc., Mount Roland Land Care, North East Bioregional Network, Threatened Plants Tasmania, Landcare Tasmania, and Wildcare Tasmania are some of the organisations we're proud to work alongside that are largely run or supported by volunteers.

These groups show up on cold mornings, run field days, host community events, and stay connected to landholders in their communities. Their work is persistent and genuinely hard, and it happens because communities of people choose to keep showing up.

💚 When we connect with these groups, sharing resources and co-delivering projects, we're not starting from scratch. Our work at NRM North goes further when we build on decades of community effort, local knowledge, and trust that volunteers have already built.
