Applications for the Tasmanian Waste and Resource Recovery Board Community Grants Program close 4 November 2026.

Grants of $10,000–$50,000 are available to eligible Tasmanian not-for-profit organisations and community groups for practical projects that avoid, reduce, reuse, repair or recycle waste.

🌸Spring on Tasmania’s coastline is nesting season for shorebirds. They lay their eggs in shallow scrapes on dry sand, blending in almost completely with their surroundings.

Parks and Wildlife Tasmania has some simple guidance on how to enjoy the beach this season without disturbing nesting birds and their chicks.

Shorebird nesting season has begun across Tasmania 🪺

As you enjoy Tassie’s coastlines this spring, keep an eye out for nesting shorebirds.

Their eggs are well-camouflaged in shallow scrapes on dry sand, and chicks remain flightless for up to a month before they grow their flight feathers.

You can help protect these vulnerable birds by following a few simple steps:
• Stick to walking on wet sand below the high tide mark
• Keep your distance from nesting birds
• Keep dogs on a lead and away from nesting areas
• Avoid driving on nesting beaches
• Leave seaweed and beach materials where they are
• Dispose of waste responsibly

We're incredibly fortunate to be working with the Landscape Recovery Foundation on the conservation of threatened native orchids in Tasmania's Midlands.

The foundation is working to propagate and transplant the critically endangered golfers leek orchid in native grasslands in the next couple of years, as part of NRM North's Improving Midlands Biodiversity project. We're also excited to welcome not 1, but 2, orchid detection dogs next month, for more field surveys. It was great to hear Lyn and Tasmanian Leek Orchid Detection Dog, Miki, were busy last month in Queensland demonstrating his impressive skills.

Miki has already discovered 73 NEW critically endangered leek orchid plants in existing populations, as part of our Improving Midlands Biodiversity project. The task is almost impossible for human surveyors, and we're looking forward to welcoming Lyn and Miki back to Tasmania this summer.
