+ tell us about your practice:
This year has been busy locally with my work at Black Box Theatre Co and as MD for LC’s production of We Will Rock You. I also composed the piano score for Mudlark Theatre’s Enough before heading to Syd for our first season of ZKI. I first started writing songs when I was in my teens so I’ve been a composer now for about 30 years, but this is the first time I have composed for the Cabaret format.
+ what makes creating in lutruwita so special/different?
Tassie artists take our creative practice very seriously. We have dedicated audiences who appreciate the craft, so when creating works for local audiences it’s important that we really honour that shared love of theatre and really leave no stone unturned as we create a work that’s deserving of people’s time and money. That’s definitely been front-of-mind for us and I can safely say that our lutruwita has never seen anything like this before!!

Zoe is eternal. A superstar – of course – but she is so much more than that. She is the aurora and the eclipse. A force of nature who bestows her light on only those she deems worthy. And if you are unworthy? Then heaven (or anyone) help your black little hearts!

+ what makes Tasmanian theatre so unique?
I think there is always a level of fearlessness that drives theatre in Tas, especially in the creation of new work. We never take for granted the opportunity to create and share and so I think that allows makers to take more risks and swing a bit wider and push the boundaries. That’s certainly what we’ve done with ZKI and the work is so much better for it!
