Junction Arts Festival 17- 20 September 2026
a collision of art + performance + music

Marking the start of spring each year, Junction is an intimate celebration of Tasmanian community and creativity, inspiring audiences through exciting and diverse performances of art, music and dance. Led by Tasdance Executive Director Adam Wheeler and featuring 10 professional dancers, 60 local dance lovers, and the world’s most popular toy, COIL uses slinkies as a tactile partner to explore analogue play and our need for connection in an increasingly digital world. Dancers negotiate tension, resistance, and release, making relationships visible through physical cause-and-effect.

As the work builds to its feel-good, participatory conclusion, COIL leans into the power of partnering en masse, extending a festival-wide invitation for creative connection and play.

COIL is supported by Creative Australia, Arts Tasmania and Festivals Australia. Assembly 197 is the home of Tasdance

Program wildcard: The Secret Life of Eels 🪱

Dive into the murky depths and uncover the secret life of Tasmania’s short-finned eel, an immersive performance following one of nature’s greatest migrations, from the tropical ocean near Vanuatu to the cool rivers of Tasmania.

Blending original music, underwater sound recordings, visuals, science and storytelling, it traces the eel’s profound hold on human history, from the ancient aquaculture systems at Budj Bim to Aristotle’s 2,300-year search for their spawning grounds. Performed by Emily Sheppard and Yyan Ng with eel researcher Dr Malcolm Johnson featuring the world’s first eel instruments!

The Island’s favourite harpist Emily is embarking on an endurance journey through the soundtrack of her life.

At 44, she has curated decades of memories, each era marked by the songs that shaped her from the early 80s to today. For Junction in three weeks, she’s moving through them all.

Pick your decade and turn up. This durational performance can be customised to your tastes and generation, or commit for the full performance and lean in.
