Some comments have shown there's confusion. These are not cameras to 'spy' or inflict fines. They are simply there to collect data about the intersection; to record the near misses and rolling stops. They will also only be in Lake Grace for 6-8 weeks before they go to another site. If you're convinced it's Big Brother then stop at the sign, then you won't be a statistic.
The WA Road Safety Commission has deployed cameras that detect near misses at dangerous intersections in Northam, Lake Grace and Perth.
Road Safety Commissioner Adrian Warner said the aim is to increase to provide local governments and other stakeholders with hard evidence on near misses.
“Usually when you go and complain to the local council in the most incidents our experience isn’t hard fact and evidence,” he said.
“How close is a close call, how near was a near miss?”
Mr Warner said assessments on road safety risks usually come from crash data.
“The intersection the City of Vincent knew was a problem but didn’t really have any hard evidence, we had 20 reported crashes in five years,” he said.
“In 10 weeks with one camera we have recorded 1200 near misses.”
