Eppalock Group Training Day đŸ”„đŸš’

Today, brigades from across the Eppalock Group came together at Lake Eppalock Holiday Park for a fantastic day of Group Training.

We worked through three dynamic scenarios: relay pumping for asset protection, an MVA involving a power pole and casualty, a gas bullet and familiarisation with the hydrant booster located at the caravan park.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part and showed such great commitment to training. It was fantastic to work through realistic scenarios that provided valuable learning opportunities for everyone. What a great group to be part of!

A special thank you to Commander Hugh Kelly for your support and guidance throughout our training. We’d also like to thank the DGO’s and training instructors for sharing your expertise and knowledge. We are incredibly lucky to have such a wealth of experience within our group.

Lastly, a massive shoutout to Leisa, Pete and Sandy at Eppalock Holiday Park for your incredible hospitality. We simply could not have run the day without you. These three wonderful people generously donated all the food and drinks for our volunteers, and we are so grateful for your kindness and support.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the day such a success. đŸš’â€ïž

On Friday night, the members of Mosquito Creek Fire Brigade came together for a truly special evening. One filled with gratitude, appreciation and celebration. ✹

It was an honour to recognise our deserving members as they received Service Awards, CFA Life Memberships and National Emergency Medals. These achievements reflect years of dedication and commitment to serving our community.
The evening wasn't just about celebrating our firefighters, it was also about recognising our incredible families. Their unwavering support makes it possible for our members to do what they do, and we are so grateful for everything they contribute behind the scenes.

We were privileged to be joined by CFA (Country Fire Authority) Board Member Ross Coyle, Eppalock Group DGO James Baker, and District 2 BASO Mel Heather. Thank you all for being part of such a memorable occasion and for your continued support.

A huge thank you to Strathfieldsaye Bowls Club, especially Terry, Natalie and Vicki for going above and beyond to make us feel so welcome and for being so accommodating throughout the evening.
Thank you to Narelle for capturing the night so beautifully through your photography 📾

Thank you to Signarama Bendigo for your donation of the stickers for the back drop. Very kind!

We were also incredibly fortunate to enjoy delicious catering from Madame Jude, a stunning dessert from 48 Cakes, and wonderful live music from Tahlia. Thank you all for helping make the evening so special.

What a fantastic night celebrating an amazing group of people. We are incredibly proud of our brigade, our families and everyone who continues to support us. đŸ„°đŸš’

đŸ€ Community Strength in Action

Community safety isn’t just about fire trucks and sirens—it happens when we are all active, prepared, and working together.

A few years ago, we were invited to provide fire and safety education to the Altona Power Boat Club. It was great to see a club so proactive in educating their members on fire preparation. Since then, they have been wonderful supporters of our Brigade and our efforts to keep the community safe.

Nothing, however, could have prepared us for a visit from Club members Paul and Mick last weekend! The members of Altona Power Boat Club have donated $1,000 to our brigade. This donation will go a long way in helping us protect our local area and develop our fire station into a space that can be used for community response in times of emergency. We are extremely grateful for the donation and support.

It has been a very long summer, and this kind of support does more than just build our capability—it does wonders for our morale. It is a great reminder that whether you are visiting from Melbourne to get out onto Lake Eppalock or living in the local bush, we’re all in this together.

We also want to extend our sincere gratitude to:

The Elmore Pacing Cup & supporters: For your wonderful donation of $540. Thank you to everyone who dug deep at the track!

Say Cheese Pizza Strathfieldsaye: For your delicious support and donation. Local businesses like yours provide such vital support to our team.

Thank you for having our backs and contributing to the safety of our community! 🚒💹

Night Shift: Where the magic happens.

A glimpse of life beyond the media images of the ‘big fire.’

Night shift is a time when the fire often calms. It brings a different pace, a chance to strengthen containment lines, and a whole new set of risks and rewards.

Last night, Saturday 10th January, your brigade at Mosquito Creek had eight firefighters working through the dark. Women and men, from their 20s to their 60s—all with different skills and personalities, but all focused on one thing: doing some good for their community.

The work is dangerous. Darkness and smoke swallow the light of torches, making hazards nearly invisible. Burnt trees crash to the ground, with only the sound to warn you they’re coming. There are holes and divots, broken fences, fallen powerlines, and rocks lying in the dark. Then, there is the raw mental and physical challenge of working from dusk to dawn.

Some firefighters love the night; others less so. But it is vital work.

Nic, a friend of the Brigade and ex-CFA/Parks Victoria firefighter, sums it up perfectly: “Night shift is never fun, but it’s really important to keep a check on the fire and give locals a chance to sleep, knowing someone has them covered.”

But the night also brings camaraderie and scenes of immense beauty. In the quiet of the early morning, you talk to keep each other going. That is when you really get to know your crew; it’s when you bond through shared experience.

In the past week, "Mozzie Creek" members have attended vehicle accidents, unattended campfires, and bushfires from Cobram to Axe Creek and then to Harcourt and Ravenswood.
Tonight, Sunday, another six members will leave their warm beds and families to do it all again.

Some will love it, others won’t—but they’ll all be there. Volunteering and keeping each other going through the small hours of dark.

As for the "magic"? It’s in the views, the teamwork, and as Andrew says “how at 3:00 AM when you’re tired and sore—a cup of instant coffee can magically taste like the best barista-made brew in the world.”
