Camping this weekend? Thinking about lighting a campfire? Campfires can turn into a bush fire in seconds if they’re not managed safely.

Before you light a fire: 🔥
• Check campfires are permitted where you are, including National Parks and campgrounds.
• Check the Fire Danger Rating and local conditions.

If campfires are allowed:
• Keep fires small and contained in an existing fire pit.
• Clear leaves, grass and other debris at least two metres around the fire.
• Never leave a campfire unattended and always keep water nearby.

When you’re finished:
• Extinguish your campfire with water, not sand or dirt.
• Pour water over the fire, stir the ashes and continue adding water until everything is cool to touch.
• Before leaving, make sure there is no heat, smoke or embers. If it’s not cold, it’s not safe.
Remember, on Total Fire Ban days, no fires can be lit in the open. Check whether gas or electric BBQs are
permitted where you are and ensure you’re following the relevant rules. If you’re unsure, don’t start one.

The final siren doesn’t stop our sirens, but we’re still ready for the big dance! 🏉🚒

Here are a few quick tips to tackle before kick-off:
• 🍗 Watch the BBQ, not just the ball: Don’t leave your snags unattended. Give your gas bottles and hoses a quick check for any leaks or rust before firing it up.
• 💨 Keep it clear: Make sure your BBQ is well away from wooden fences, decks, or any dry overhanging branches.
• 🏠 Score a try for home safety: Take 30 seconds to test your smoke alarms today.
• ⏰ Clock check: Sunday marks the start of daylight saving time, so double-check your local TV guides so you don’t miss a minute of the action!

If your caravan is your permanent home rather than a holiday destination, it is even more important to plan and prepare for the bushfire season. Take extra care with campfires. If campfires are allowed and conditions are safe, keep them small, contained, and clear of leaves, grass and flammable materials. Never leave a campfire unattended and always keep a constant supply of water close. When putting out a campfire, use water—not sand or dirt. Stir the ashes and add water until everything is cool to touch. Ensure you have adequate water supplies available to you during the bush fire season, to extinguish fires and help you protect your home should an emergency occur. THE LONG WEEKEND IS FAST APPROACHING - Bush fires can occur quickly and without warning. Before you travel, make sure you have checked the conditions and have a plan in place if things change. Let people know your movements and if it’s not safe, avoid traveling altogether. Always keep an eye out for emergency vehicles and if you see a fire call triple Zero (000).
