Amateur Radio and Scouting: Connecting Scouts Worldwide Since 1957
Amateur radio has been a powerful tool for Scouts and Guides to connect with each other locally and across the globe for decades. Since 1957, the Jamboree-on-the-Air (JOTA) has brought young people together through the magic of radio, promoting international friendship, cultural exchange, and a shared spirit of adventure.
As a qualified amateur radio operator, you have a unique opportunity to introduce this exciting world to your Scout or Guide group. Whether you're operating a station at your local meeting or participating in a larger JOTA event, you can help youth members:
Learn about radio communication and technology
Make real-time voice or digital contacts with Scouts and Guides in other countries
Develop confidence in communication and problem-solving skills
Earn relevant Scouting badges or recognition
Getting involved is easy and rewarding — it's a hands-on way to bring STEM to life, spark curiosity, and create unforgettable memories.
Be the link that connects your Scouts and Girl Guides, to the world!

Even though Jamboree On The Air does not look the same as in the past, youth members can still attend a virtual JOTA amateur radio station, using a video conferencing facility. Guides and Scouts can still ask questions or send messages to others, using the magic of amateur radio. JOTA operators will pass on the messages to other JOTA stations, and you can hear the replies, just as if you were attending a JOTA radio station in person. To participate, leaders should register at https://events.greaterwestscouts.com.au/event/465 More than one youth member can be included on the same registration. This event is open to both guides and scouts, who would then be eligible to receive a JOTA 2021 badge.

Alternative JOTA activities may be available depending on changes to the COVID19 situation. More information will be posted as plans advance.

Scout BP Trophy awarded to JOTA amateur radio operator. At the conclusion of the Endeavour Boree Regatta, amateur radio operator Patrick, VK2FPAT, was awarded the BP Trophy for his contribution to guides and scouts.
Patrick showed outstanding initiative in ensuring that both guides and scouts participated in Jamboree On The Air activities as part of the Boree Regatta. Patrick was very active in encouraging youth members to make on air contacts and participate in a fox hunt" to find hidden radio transmitters.
Patrick obtained his amateur radio licence at the age of 9 years old, participating JOTA each year since. Now 12 years old, Patrick will commence high school next year. Well done Patrick.
