Kuranda Conservation

Kuranda Conservation Kuranda based nursery, aiming to assist and educate the public in matters such as; native ecology, sustainability, land management and animal conservation.

We are completely volunteer run and owned. Kuranda Conservation is an entirely volunteer organization whose objectives are to assist the community to use land in an ecologically sustainable way and to enhance natural biodiversity through education and demonstration. We promote awareness of the environment required for the preservation of cassowaries including habitat protection and enhancement, an

d domestic and feral animal control. We participate in research to better understand the needs of this unique, umbrella species. If the cassowary survives then the other fauna and flora of our region will also. We believe we’ll make good decisions about what we grow on our properties, what pets we keep, how we behave on the roads and bush tracks and how we design our towns and houses by measuring the impact our actions have on cassowary habitat in this part of the world.

It appears that cassowary Elvis Lost his last chick at his regular Range Road crossing last Saturday. I am informed by QPWS rangers that the juvenile was struck by a car and had his leg broken and other injuries such that he/she had to be euthanised.
Elvis, probably the best known cassowary in Kuranda, has lost most if not all his offspring at that crossing. Elvis himself was hit about 18 months ago and disappeared for some 8 days before he limped back to his regular circuit.
The mating season is in full swing now so he’ll probably meet up with Priscilla and do it all again.
This is the first vehicle strike we’ve had since the speed limit was reduced from 80kph to 60kph.
