Desert Pea Media is a registered charity organization, established in 2003. For over a decade we have been learning, building relationships and perfecting a process of working with young people and communities in regional and remote areas in Australia. DPM focuses on the process of storytelling to empower young people and to create important social and cultural dialogue. Ou

r programs create high quality and relevant media forms – and therefore create REAL engagement with young people. We work with elders, young people, community leaders and local service providers to support and inform the conversation, and create meaningful cultural dialogue around local cultural and social issues.

Did you know that Desert Pea Media is a registered charitable organisation and a tax-deductible gift recipient?

We’ve been busy building new strategies and planning for the future this year. We’re dreaming up some really exciting projects in 2026 and 27 (our 25yr Anniversary) - focusing on long-term, sustainable community projects.

But to make it all happen - we need your support. Make a tax-deductible donation to DPM this FY and become part of this incredible journey.

We’re also available from July 2026 to deliver new community media projects.

Reach out if your organisation has ideas for using film and music to create positive change.

Today we’re Throwing it back to Culture Remainz (2013) — a classic DPM project created in just five days by students and staff from Tagai State College alongside Desert Pea Media on Thursday Island (Waybeni).

More than a music video, Culture Remainz celebrated the strength, diversity and resilience of the peoples of the Zenadh Kes. Through music, dance and storytelling, young people honoured the struggles of the past while sharing a message of cultural pride, identity and hope for the future.

"Dress code, language, diet changed. Pride in our culture remains."

A lasting reminder that culture endures, voices matter, and the future belongs to the next generation.

DPM’s creative process is what sets us apart.

More than arts workshops - our yarn has been developed and refined over decades, with contributions from people of all cultures, experience and form.

It’s an opportunity for real talk. For sitting in circles and sharing story. Finding the truth. Debriefing. Identifying the barriers to our healing and growth as people, as families, as communities, as humans.

Audiences see the amazing outcomes, get the goosebumps, feel part of something special.

At DPM - it’s the YARN that connects us.

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is THIS WEEK - celebrating and building respectful relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the wider Australian community.

Desert Pea Media is a Charity Organisation based in Regional NSW that has embraced the concept of reciprocity and genuine relationships between cultures for more than two decades. DPM was Co-Founded in 2002 by Toby Finlayson (a Comms student at CSU Bathurst) and Matt Priestley (a Gomeroi Man from Moree NSW) alongside a group of artists, activists, students and creatives (and Toby’s mum) .

The team has grown over 24 years, and DPM has changed shape many times - but it’s this concept of genuine friendship and collaboration that has paved the way for over 200+ projects in over 90 communities Australia-wide and Internationally.

Happy Reconciliation Week you mob. It’s not always easy, but keep searching for common ground. Teamwork makes the dream work ❤️❤️❤️.

Always was. Always will be.

Today is National Sorry Day. We remember the mistreatment of the thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who were forcibly removed from their families.

We acknowledge the generational grief and trauma caused for ATSI peoples around Australia, and we celebrate the resilience and strength of the First Nations people of this magic place we call Australia.

Big love to all the mob today, and every day.

Desert Pea Media has BIG TINGS in the works coming in June/July. The Crossroads Project has been running in Kuranda FNQ since February 2026. This long-term project model combines DPM’s songwriting/ music video projects with cultural archiving (including an amazing Elder’s Film in partnership with Djabugay Aboriginal Corporations), and regular, consistent creative workshops in partnership with YouthLink Kuranda. All roads lead to a Special Event on July 11th at Kuranda Amphitheatre - celebrating Djabugay culture, community and young people.

Funded by QLD Department of Youth Justice and Victim Support.

Throwback Thursday is on again! It’s another crowd favourite from WALGETT NSW!

The Mob, ‘Dhinawan Touch the Stars’ (circa 2016)

The song is a celebration of culture, songline, connection to country and pride in Australia's Indigenous heritage.

Written, recorded and filmed over 5 days in June 2016 in the remote community of Walgett in Northwest NSW.

Desert Pea Media projects involve a dialogue-based storytelling process that encouraged participants to analyze 'the real', 'the ideal' and 'the bridge’. Critically thinking about how to create positive change for individuals, for each other and for our communities.

This project featured music by Carlo Santone (Blue King Brown, Nattali Rize). Written by local young people, in collaboration with DPM Fam Toby Finlayson, Michael Graham (aka MC Boomalli - RIP) and legendary Indigenous hip hop artist, Director, Producer, Label Owner Fred Leone aka Rival MC.

Big love and respect to all the mob from THE GATE.
