Mosswood Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre is a non-profit charity based in Koroit, South West Victoria, where 100% of donations go directly towards rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing native wildlife from our region.

We are often asked whether people can visit Mosswood... Our wildlife rehabilitation licence does not permit public visits. This is because our focus is on doing what is best for the animalsโ€”providing a safe, quiet environment with as little stress and human interaction as possible while they are in care, giving them the best chance of a successful release back into the wild.

This means Mosswood relies solely on donations and grants to continue operating.

Wildlife rehabilitation requires an enormous amount of dedication, knowledge, and experience to ensure injured, sick, orphaned, and displaced animals receive the best possible care. The goal is always to successfully return them to the wild, where they belong.

Not the outcome we were hoping for. ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ

Sadly, the young male koala (affectionately known as Winston by his rescuer) from our previous post, passed away overnight.

He must have been extremely compromised and unwell that despite his efforts, he was simply unable to keep fighting.

We'll never know exactly what led to this poor koalas decline, but hopefully his story serves as a reminder that raising a koala is far from simple. Koalas have very specialised needs, and it takes extensive knowledge, experience, guidance, and care to raise a joey into a capable wild koala.

This young male koala is far from out of the woods ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿจ๐Ÿฉต

The amazing Holly spotted this fella on the side of the road and knew something wasn't quite right. Holly managed to safely contain him and get him to Mosswood for assessment.

Starving, dehydrated, malnourished, and struggling... yet even for a weak and sick koala, this boy is on another level of sooky.

A wild, adult koala should not want to be handled or touched. A wild, adult koala should not want human company or affection.

His behaviour has us wondering... Was he raised by humans? Did he never get the right start in life? Was he fed an inappropriate diet from a young age? Is he lacking essential gut flora? Has he missed out on learning the skills and behaviours that wild koalas need to survive?
It would explain alot. ๐Ÿค”

๐Ÿ™ Pleeease remember...๐Ÿ™
Koalas and all wildlife belong in the wild.
If they need help, they should only be cared for by an experienced, and registered wildlife carer or shelter.

Just another koala wondering where to go for food, safety, and shelter as human housing expands and koala housing disappears.

This poor juvenile kangaroo found himself caught in fencing wire, most likely while trying to jump over the fence with his mob (family). ๐Ÿฆ˜

In the wildlife rescue world, we call this a "fence hanger". This occurs when a kangaroo attempts to leap over a fence but slips a leg between twisted or barbed wires, leaving it suspended and unable to free itself. These accidents can cause severe injuries, including extensive tissue damage, muscle tears, nerve damage, fractures, and dislocated hips.

Sadly, depending on factors such as how long the animal has been trapped, the damage is often irreversible.
Which unfortunately was the case for this young roo. ๐Ÿ’”

A huge thank you to Jess for calling it in and staying with him till our volunteer, Ros arrived!

Also, thank you to the team at The Vet Group - Pet Care - Woolaston, for coming in on a public holiday to assess this young roo and then humanely end his suffering. ๐Ÿซถ
The Woolaston Vet Group are always willing to go that extra mile. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Guess word has spread that Jan's place has great koala leaf! ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿจ๐Ÿ’š

Jan from Woodford is an amazingly kind, generous, and giving person who lets Mosswood trim leafy branches from her eucalyptus trees from time to time so we can feed the koalas in our care. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Do you have koala food trees that you wouldn't mind having occasionally pruned to help feed koalas in care? ๐ŸŒณ

Be like Jan. The world needs more people like Jan.

Whereโ€™s P.J? ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿจ

Can you spot our big, beautiful, boisterous boy?
Luckily, his a BIG koala so it does help to spot him ๐Ÿ˜‰

Note: The barrier around the tree only goes part of the way around, so he can still come and go as he pleases.
