We (JKA/WF Australia) are proud of our instructor’s true value, dedication, commitment in teaching (sharing knowledge) of Traditional JKA Shotokan Karate in Australia to its inspiring members.

Profile of Sensei Owen Brooks (3rd Dan JKA), who teaches in Townsville (Queensland).

Sensei Owen began training in 1981 at the age of 15 with Sensei Mike Connolly at Inala in Brisbane under the Japan Karate Association of Australia (JKA Australia) and the guidance of Shunsuke Takahashi Sensei from Japan.

Sensei Owen then began his own electrical contracting business in 1990 and later joined the Royal Australian Air Force in 2002 with multiple deployments including to Afghanistan and IRAQ (He was medically discharged in 2022 at the rank of Flight Sergeant E-8).

Karate training as you can imagine was very sporadic over this period and he returned to full time training in 2017 under Sensei Mark Szalajko tutelage at Bujutsu Martial Arts in NSW.

JKA Townsville Dojo was founded in 2020 with support from Sensei Jason Naylor and Sensei Mark Szalajko.

Sensei Owen is presently the Secretary for JKA WF Australia and a member of Karate Australia and Karate Queensland.
