Our team has been working with the Tiwi Rangers researching the best methods to control feral cats in recent months. This last week we have removed 7 feral cats from high conservation areas through humane thermal shooting transects.

The stomach contents of one female cat weighing 3.2 kg showed a Rijinga (savanna glider) had just been killed and eaten shortly before the cat was located and removed.

The savanna glider has only recently been described as its own species and is only found in northern australia. This species has dissappeared from 35% of its former habitat and is continuing to decline across the Top End like the majority of other small mammals.

The Tiwi Islands are a stronghold for the savanna glider, but our work is showing this beautiful species is being commonly predated upon by feral cats on the islands and highlights the great need of this feral cat research and management.

🚨 RED ALERT: Common myna at large in Victor Harbor and surrounds. 🚨

There is an immediate call for sightings of this bird, seen earlier this week in Encounter Bay, on the outskirts of Victor Harbor.

The common myna (also known as the Indian myna) is not native to Australia and is an extremely aggressive bird that evicts other native birds from their nests, destroys their eggs and kills their chicks.

It is important to immediately report any sightings via https://www.feralscan.org.au/mynascan/ or by calling the Pest Alert Hotline on 1800 084 881. This information will help us to track down and destroy these birds before they reproduce and become established in South Australia.

Please note that the common myna should not be mistaken for the native noisy miner or yellow-throated miner, which look similar, except the native species have light grey to grey-brown bodies.

Great work Derek and all the Tiwi Rangers for tackling feral cats here on the Tiwi Islands!

Some of the rangers will be working this weekend on the feral cat project. Even though its the weekend, the traps still need to be checked. Here's one of the rangers Derek Puruntatameri with a 5kg feral cat caught in a trap.

We have had a great day hosting our NT colleagues from the Tiwi Islands and the Pellew Island Archipelago here on Kangaroo Island before we all present our work at the Island Arks Symposium this week.

We went to the beautiful south coast, spending time at Seal Bay Conservation Park, the Flinders Chase National Park and toured the Western River Refuge- a great start to the week!
