“Who knew a conversation about funerals could leave us feeling informed, inspired, and sharing so many laughs?”

We started the night at the ever-popular Songbird Café & Larder, a true Kinglake local hotspot, where members enjoyed a delicious dinner featuring burgers, barramundi, chicken Kiev and the crowd favourite – butter chicken! Of course, there was also room for a cheeky cocktail, a glass of wine, and an indulgent dark chocolate, cherry, bread and butter pudding. Thank you to Rach, Chris and the wonderful Songbird team for looking after us. Songbird Cafe & Larder

We then headed to the Kinglake Ranges Neighbourhood House for a fascinating guest speaker evening with Michael and Alicia Hall from Hall’s Funeral Services, with locations in Whittlesea and Diamond Creek.

Michael shared the story of four generations of the Hall family serving their community through funeral care, setting the tone with light-hearted family stories and humour, proving that even in a profession many consider taboo, there is room for compassion, connection and laughter.

Death is something we all face, yet it is often a topic we avoid. Michael and Alicia helped demystify the process by sharing valuable information about funeral planning, paperwork, available options, and who to turn to when the time comes. Their message was simple but powerful: being prepared is okay, and it can make an incredibly difficult time just a little easier for families.

We were particularly moved by stories of their support for families experiencing the loss of a child. Hall’s Funeral Services provides children’s funerals on a not-for-profit basis, charging only direct costs and waiving service fees as a way of giving back to the community. They also shared their involvement with Angel Gowns Australia, a beautiful charity that provides handcrafted angel gown garments to families who have experienced the heartbreaking loss of a baby.

As fellow Rotarians, Michael and Alicia also spoke about their commitment to supporting local clubs and community groups whenever they can.

The evening was informative, thoughtful, and surprisingly uplifting. We shared many laughs, asked plenty of questions, and felt comfortable discussing a topic that is often difficult to talk about.

A sincere thank you to Michael and Alicia for creating such a safe and welcoming space, and to the Kinglake Ranges Neighbourhood House for hosting us. We finished the evening the best Rotary way possible – over a cup of tea and a slice of beautiful homemade banana cake. Kinglake Ranges Neighbourhood House

A New Tradition Begins for the Youth of the Mountain!

Wednesday night saw something pretty special happen in Kinglake.

Our very first Youth Showcase Night brought together schools, clubs, community groups, families, local leaders, and passionate volunteers, all with one shared belief:

>>> Our young people matter.

Before we talk about the night itself, it's important to recognise the person who made it happen.

This event began as an idea from our New Generations Director, Tamara Fowkes.

The result wasn't just an event.

It was a room full of people discovering new pathways, making connections, sharing ideas, and seeing just how much support already exists for young people in our community.

Tamara's passion for creating opportunities for local youth was evident in every part of the evening, and our community is better for it. We are incredibly proud of what she has achieved and grateful for the energy, heart, and determination she invested to bring this vision to life.

The night kicked off with a BBQ proudly sponsored by Murrindindi Shire Council and cooked with love by our BBQ masters. Thank you to all of our Rotarians and Friends of Rotary, Andy, Nina, Miriam, Helmut, Julie, Jordyn, Donna, Rowan and Sarah for helping put the night together and everyone who helped leading up to it.

From the very beginning, the energy in the room was electric, thanks to the ever-enthusiastic Rowan Francis, who rallied the crowd and introduced the "hostess with the most-est, Tamara 'That's All Fowkes'" 😆

And what a night it turned out to be.

The room was filled with passionate people sharing pathways, programs, ideas, and opportunities designed to help our young people grow, connect, build confidence, and thrive.

A huge thank you to our incredible guest speakers and presenters:

🌱 Tamara Fowkes – launching the brand-new Rotary Youth Community Challenge (RYCC) for Grade 6 students, sharing the 6–7 Transition Scholarship, and opportunities through Murcotts Defensive Driving for young drivers.

🚨 Leanne Klammer – showcasing the exciting world of Junior SES, with a special thank you to the SES Kinglake Unit crew for bringing the truck (and all the lights!) which helped light up the carpark and made the night extra special.

🧠 Linda Gidlund & Sally West – sharing the life-changing opportunities available through Interact, Rotaract, Earlyact, RYLA District 9790 and RYPEN Youth Leadership Programs. Rypen Rise

🏎 Rowan Francis – bringing passion and energy to Penguin Racing.

🔬 STEM Programs – showcased via video, highlighting future-focused opportunities in science, technology, engineering and maths.

🚒 Elliot Sheedy – proudly sharing opportunities through Junior CFA - Kinglake West Fire Brigade
Thank you to the Kinglake CFA crew for bringing the fire truck along for the kids and supporting Elliot's presentation.

🌏 Nat Hood – inspiring us with the possibilities of Rotary Youth Exchange 9790, where young people can experience life, culture and learning in another country.

⛵ Milt Golenberg – introducing the adventure and challenge of the Sailing Challenge Program. All the way from the Rotary Club of Holbrook Australia

🏉 Justin Bumpstead – sharing how the Kinglake Junior Football Club supports youth through wellbeing, leadership, teamwork and belonging.

🤝 Kirsty Roberts – Community Development & Partnerships Officer, Growing Healthy Communities, Murrindindi Shire Council – sharing exciting future opportunities for young people across our region.

A special shoutout also to the incredible community organisations and legends who joined us:

💛 Luke, Principal of Kinglake Primary School, with information for families looking ahead to 2027 enrolments. Kinglake Primary School

💛 Corrienne from Kinglake Ranges Neighbourhood House, sharing the latest opportunities and support available through the neighbourhood house.

💛 Sheren and Neralle from the Youth Enterprise Hub, collecting valuable feedback and ideas as they work towards creating a future youth hub for our community.

💛 And a cameo appearance from local legend Kirk Mercuri, sharing his inspiring book Step by Step – Living with Autism.

Of course, no community event is complete without refreshments 😍 Fresh fruit, biscuits, and the most delicious chocolate brownie from our friends at Valley Meal Prep Au — safe to say it disappeared very quickly!

We were also honoured to welcome Damien Gallagher, Murrindindi Shire Councillori whose support for youth in our region means so much.

With Murrindindi Shire investing in youth opportunities across Kinglake, Yea and Eildon over the next two years, this night felt bigger than just an event.

Thank you to the Rotary Club of Diamond Creek and Yea Rotary for attending & showing support.

It felt like a community saying:

✨ We're all in. ✨

As Damien shared so perfectly:

"Our young, engaged, community-conscious citizens become future community leaders and community-conscious adults."

The feedback from the night has been overwhelming:

💬 "It was the most amazing event — showcasing the many options available to the youth on the mountain."

💬 "Great belly laughs, best sausage sizzle and people who really care about the younger generation's future."

💬 "Well done on coordinating and organising a splendid event focused on bringing together youth and community!"

Most importantly, the night proved something powerful:

We already have incredible opportunities for young people here.

Now imagine what happens when schools, clubs, families, community groups, Council and Rotary all work together to build even more.

To everyone who came, presented, volunteered, cooked, supported, encouraged, shared ideas, or simply showed up for our young people — thank you.

And to Tamara, thank you for seeing the potential for something bigger, having the courage to start it, and putting in the hard work to turn an idea into reality.

This truly feels like the beginning of something pretty special for the mountain. 💛⛰️

Thanks Nina, Tamara, Jordyn, and Rotary Club of Kinglake Ranges for the Youth Showcase event last night at Ellimatta.

With so many things competing for their attention, it's tough to engage our young citizens but it's never been more important. Our young, engaged, community-conscious citizens become future community leaders and community-conscious adults.

We thrive because of our volunteers and the opportunity afforded us by caring community organisations.

A big thanks to SES Kinglake Unit, Kinglake CFA, Kinglake West Fire Brigade, Rotary Club of Kinglake Ranges, Kinglake Junior Football Club, and Murrindindi Shire Youth for demonstrating the endless opportunities for young people across the Ranges to engage, participate, and grow.

A report on our May Vocational Visit from our Club Member & International Director - Julie Burges.

As a very recent newcomer to Kinglake, I was aware that there was no such thing as a King Lake and that Kinglake is named after Alexander William Kinglake a lawyer, British author and Member of Parliament for a Somerset constituency in England. What I didn’t know was that he never came to Australia and that surprised me. I discovered this interesting fact while visiting the Kinglake Heritage Centre and Museum with fellow club members, what a treat! Our numbers were swelled by a couple of Rotarians from the Yea Rotary Club, a prospective member Damon, and other locals.

I chuckled when we were told that years ago local lads, when asked for directions to the lake, often led visitors up the garden path, ‘turn left up there, hang a right and then turn left again’ leaving bemused visitors none the wiser as to where the lake was located.

Established in 1984, the Kinglake Historical Society (KHS) volunteers have done a first-rate job of gathering and preserving an extensive collection of maps, photographs and information.
“The KHS believes that the preservation of local history is vital in any community to give it a sense of its development and identity and its importance to the rest of the State and to Australia. “ (KHS Website)

Unsurprisingly there is a focus on the effects of bushfire on Kinglake and surrounds, and a special three-sided booth has been erected to exhibit information on the 2009 Black Saturday Bushfires. The rear wall has a remarkable painting by a local artist who painted her recollection of the wall of fire as it headed toward her property, sobering viewing.

The most recent acquisition to the Historical Society’s collection is the relocation of the restored Kinglake Post Office beside the Heritage centre.

“This building, dating from 1914 so now 112 years old, has had a very interesting history - in fact, a charmed life, having three times escaped being burnt down when buildings beside it were destroyed. Its other claim to fame – it was arguably the smallest PO in Australia!” (KHS Website)

Following our visit to the Heritage Centre we adjourned to Little Italy where we enjoyed a meal and conversation. Kim (Happy Birthday Kim!) learned that Damon was a near neighbour and I enjoyed the rapport they developed over their shared love of animals and gardens. Tony from Yea Rotary also addressed the group, seeking support for the fence building efforts in Yarck following the January 2026 bushfires.
It was another successful vocational outing, and we headed home through the fog that enveloped the ‘mountain’

It’s a new year and we’re ready to go! Our club had our first get together for 2026 last night at the fantastic Philip Lobley Wines . The delicious woodfired pizzas paired with their homegrown drops went down a treat!

We had the pleasure of being joined by Lena & Raf from Valley Meal Prep Au and thank them for so often feeding our club throughout 2025

It was wonderful to have so many littles running around! 🏃‍♂️ 🏃

We missed members Andy & Donna who were hard at work up with Yea Rotary feeding the volunteers working throughout the affected Longwood Fire areas and everyone else who couldn’t join us as they were working or enjoying family time.
