Kilcoy RSL members, Vietnam Veterans, Veterans and community members joined together on the 18th of August to commemorate Vietnam Veterans Day, on the 60th Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan.

They remembered the sacrifice of those who died, and to say thank you to the almost 60,000 who served during the 10 years of our involvement in the Vietnam War.

They joined together to commemorate all the battles fought by Australians in Vietnam, from large-scale operations to platoon encounters. We remember the members of the Royal Australian Air Force, who served in combat and transport roles, the nursing staff who served at the Australian Field Hospital in Vung Tau, and the sailors of the Royal Australian Navy who supported land operations.

We paused to reflect on the bravery, teamwork and endurance that Australians displayed throughout the war.

⛳ KILCOY ADF PAST & PRESENT VETERANS GOLF DAY ⛳

What a fantastic day at Kilcoy Golf Club on Wednesday for the Kilcoy ADF Past & Present Veterans Golf Day.

It was wonderful to see veterans, serving members, supporters and friends come together for a great day of golf, mateship and plenty of laughs along the way.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part, our generous sponsors and everyone who helped make the day such a success.

The event is raising funds towards the upgrade of the “For Valour” Walk at Yowie Park and the WWI Memorial on Neurum Road. A wonderful cause helping us honour and remember those who have served.

🏅 A VERY SPECIAL HONOUR FOR MAY WALLACE

On Wednesday, 12 August, the Kilcoy RSL Sub Branch had the great honour of welcoming Major General Stephen Day, DSC AM, who joined our RSL members, Legacy members and local veterans for a very special occasion, the presentation of the RSL Meritorious Service Medal to our own May Wallace.

The Meritorious Service Medal is the RSL’s highest honour above Life Membership, recognising exceptional and sustained service to the League. It is awarded to members who have given many years of outstanding service.

And if anyone deserves this recognition, it is May.

May has dedicated more than 30 years to RSL Queensland, beginning her RSL journey at Proserpine, where she became the first female President of a Queensland RSL Sub Branch in 1993.

Since moving to Kilcoy, May has continued to give an extraordinary amount of her time and energy to our Sub Branch and our community. She has served as Secretary, Vice President, Membership Officer and, since 2021, our Wellbeing Support Officer.

She is the person behind so much of what happens at our commemorative services. Organising parades, guests, speakers, meals, Defence Force participation and school involvement. She helps with memorabilia sales and raffles, volunteers behind the bar, welcomes visitors and is always one of the first to put her hand up when help is needed.

But perhaps one of May’s most important roles is the support she provides to our veterans. From visiting veterans in aged care and those who are housebound, to driving veterans to medical appointments and simply being there when someone needs a friendly face, May does it with genuine care and compassion.

Her service extends well beyond the RSL too. May has been a Legacy member since 2012, supporting local war widows, volunteers with Meals on Wheels and the local Anglican Church community pantry, and regularly lends a hand at community events around Kilcoy.

As John Robinson, our Sub Branch President, said in his endorsement of May:

“May is a mentor to the younger veterans joining the RSL and is a key member of the Kilcoy community.”

We couldn’t agree more.

Your years of service, kindness, commitment and willingness to help others have made an enormous difference to our RSL, our veterans and the wider Kilcoy community.

We are incredibly proud to call you one of our own.

Congratulations on receiving the RSL Meritorious Service Medal, May. You are truly deserving.
